OPENING SERVE
The Knights dropped their first match of the season against 2011 NAIA Runners-Up Fresno Pacific, but will have to put that behind them before their six-match swing at the Grand Canyon Tournament. Academy of Art will play six matches in four days, including double days on Friday and Saturday.
SEASIDERS SIT IN SECOND NATIONALLY
BYU-Hawaii is in second place in the ITA/NCAA polls as the 2012 spring season gets underway, and are also first in the West Region. The Seasiders defeated 14th-ranked Grand Canyon 8-1 to start the GCU Tournament yesterday and followed that up with a 9-0 win over Western New Mexico later in the day. Led by Annie Hwang and Sherry Liu, BYU-Hawaii won handily 8-1 and 9-0 on the first day.
EVEN THE ODDS
Hawaii Hilo and the Urban Knights split their two matches last year, with ART U winning in Hawaii 5-2 and then the Sea Warriors winning 6-3 in California. The Vulcans will return to action led by juniors Melanie Viriyapunt and Anna Hamlin, as the team is without any seniors on the roster.
HOW SWEDE IT IS
The Urban Knights welcomed
Sofia Persson (Gothenburg) and
Jenny Johansson (Älmhult) to the team this year, who joined
Cecilia Hedin (Boras) to form a veritable trifecta who all grew up in Sweden before attending Academy of Art. Coach Jerry Peach lauds his Scandinavian stars for their international experience and their Swedish style of play, which should translate well to the courts of the PacWest.
'LOPING TO VICTORY
Grand Canyon goes into the tournament ranked 14th in Division II. The Lopes, who are hosting the tournament in Glendale, rebounded from their opening loss to BYU-Hawaii to defeat Dixie State 9-0 to even their record at 1-1. Justine Majan and Cecilia Vergnet won their No.3 doubles match, 8-1. Majan then won her No. 4 singles match, 6-0 6-1, to finish 3-1 for the day.
REINING IN THE MUSTANGS
The Urban Knights will face off against Western New Mexico for the first time in the two program's history. The Mustangs dropped a tough 5-4 contest in their opener, and then lost to BYU-Hawaii yesterday to open the tournament. Western New Mexico has three freshman on their team, and are led by their lone senior Nikolina Vukadin
COMING BACK FOR MORE
The Urban Knights return
Kunkanda "Cartoon" Phukchampa,
Paola Correa Fe,
Cecilia Hedin, and Belen Tenorio for their final years, and will continue to look to their seniors for leadership and experience. The Knights will also be returning
Courtney DeWalt,
Amal Ben El Hadj, and former PacWest Freshman of the Year
Diane Phan from last year's campaign that ended in an impressive finish in the conference.
SWORDS IN THE STONE
Chaminade finished last year in the middle of the PacWest with a 6-10 record. The Silverswords are led
by All PacWest performers Yuka Kondo and Yanita Arnaudova. The two teams split last year, with the Knights taking the first matchup 7-2 and the Swords answering the call later in the year.
TRITONS STUMBLE OUT OF THE GATE
UC San Diego came out of the off-season ranked #17 in Division II, but has lost three straight to remain winless in 2012. Tritons Samantha Yeung, Tara Vanooteghem, and Jacquelyn Davis all forced three sets in their singles match-ups. UCSD also secured a victory at No. 3 doubles as Katie Mulloy paired with Laura Wilke to defeat PLNU's Wileen Chui and Samantha Mohr, 8-4.
