KNIGHT WATCH
Uniting the “International Men of Mystery,” a total of 11 Urban Knights have been involved in nine Academy of Art University goals whether it be as the scorer or assistor. After his goal last week against GCU, junior
Patrick Heinemann joins freshman
Jesus "Chava" Sanchez as the two ART U players with two goals apiece. Junior
Aron Ekberg has three assists to lead the team while sophomore
Jonmundur Gretarsson's two came in Academy of Art University's 2-1 victory over Azusa Pacific two weeks ago. Senior
Grimur Grimsson, who had the dramatic game-winner against SF State and an assist last week, has continued to build upon his status as the all-time career points leader (28) for his ART U. Senior goalkeeper
Ian Sutherland officially reached the 200 career saves mark last week and ranks second in the PacWest with 43 thus far in 2012.
PENGUINS TURNING UP THE HEAT
Dominican reeled off three consecutive victories to start 2012 including a 4-0 win over Cal State East Bay (Sept. 1) and a 5-0 result against William Jessup (Sept. 11). The Penguins fell 5-0 to Azusa Pacific to start PacWest play, but then righted their ship with wins against Dixie State (2-0 on Sept. 17), Cal Maritime (5-0 on Sept. 22), and Holy Names (4-3 on Sept. 25). Led by the PacWest's leading goal scorer, Pedro Guevara, the Penguins have out-scored their opponents 23-9 thus far. Holding down the majority of the goalkeeping duties has been Erik Anderson who has 42 saves and a 1.5 goals against average in 540 minutes. Thursday's match against ART U will be just Dominican's second away from home. A storied rivalry has the Penguins leading the Knights 4-2 all time.
HAWKS LAND IN SAN FRAN
Holy Names began the season with a 3-3 tie against Cal State San Marcos then reeled off three consecutive convincing victories over Bethesda Christian, Simpson (CA), and Point Loma to start PacWest play. Continuing their early season homestand, the Hawks then fell 1-0 to California Baptist (Sept. 15) and 2-1 to Grand Canyon (Sept. 20) before pushing back a 2-0 win over Dixie State (Sept. 22). As mentioned above, HNU fell 4-3 to Dominican earlier this week in a match where the Hawks' own goal shifted the momentum. Jaime Phillips scored his team-leading seventh goal of the year in that match. He ranks second in the PacWest in that category. On the defensive side, Philip Poser has made all eight starts, collecting 27 saves and allowing 12 goals. Saturday will be the first-ever meeting of the Hawks and Knights.
THE WEEK THAT WAS
ART U continued its extended homestand this past week, achieving a
1-1 tie with Dixie State and even going up 1-0 on #10 Grand Canyon despite the Antelopes' 4-1 win. Against the Red Storm, the Knights were behind 1-0 at halftime, but resiliently battled back to tie things up when junior
Sylvester Gyan received a ball from both
Thorvaldur "Thobbi" Sveinsson and Ekberg for the equalizer. Both teams had chances in the overtime periods, but the defense held up for Academy of Art University's first tie since 2009.
Welcoming the #10 team in the nation on Saturday, ART U captured an early advantage with a goal by Heinemann in the 14th minute. Ekberg again provided the assist, but this time GCU responded with a pair of goals in each half to rally back from the early deficit, earning a
4-1 victory in the end.
LOOKING AHEAD
On the road following this week's action, ART U first travels to Notre Dame de Namur (Oct. 4) then California Baptist (Oct. 13) four-match roadtrip before returning home for their Senior Day on Oct. 26.
