San Francisco, CA -- Finishing off a busy month of September at home, the Urban Knights partook in a back-and-forth second half against Holy Names on Saturday afternoon. Academy of Art University, playing its final match at City College of SF this season, found itself down 1-0, then tied 1-1, and eventually a late Hawks goal swung the pendulum in HNU's favor. On International Day, a fitting connection saw Iceland native Grimur Grimsson find Germany native Frederik Nagel for ART U's lone goal in the 67th minute.

"I thought the team showed its character and heart today," head coach Daniel Rosaia said. "It was an emotional day for our guys. To be down, come back to tie, and lose late is not something we're used to. Our guys are used to being the ones winning late. We are still trying I get over the hump and we will back to work this week to fix what we need to work on.”

Attacking early, the Urban Knights had registered five shots before Holy Names' first attempt and among those tries was a strong header on frame by sophomore Jonmundur Gretarsson. Senior Ian Sutherland saved the first shot from the Hawks, but with such an offensive push and tough defense by ART U, he would not log another save for the entire period.

Nagel foreshadowed his second-half success when he fired a shot off within seconds of substituting into the match late in the opening period. His attempt was blocked by the HNU defense and later a shot by freshman Sebastian Zuniga managed to be saved by Philip Poser, the Hawks' goalkeeper.

In the second half, the scoreless tie was broken by Henry Goh who followed up an initial try by Rasmus Larsson which ricocheted off the ART U defense. Trailing 1-0, the Knights found themselves in a familiar situation, but they once again refused to give in. Nagel entered the contest in the 66th minute and on cue he put one into the net in the 67th minute. A corner kick by Grimsson set up what was a pinpoint header by Nagel to the far post from six yards out.

Both teams now looked for an advantage in a 1-1 contest and, though Sutherland, made several beautiful saves with under 10 minutes to play, the Hawks managed one final blow in the 86th minute. A free kick by Jaime Phillips bounced off Sutherland's chest as he hit the ground and it was Tomas Horak who swooped in to tap the ball to the far post. In the end, a 2-1 victory for Holy Names was Saturday's result.

Academy of Art University, 2-7-1 overall and 1-4-1 in PacWest, was led offensively by Nagel's goal and the assist from Grimsson. It was Nagel's first goal of the season and, with the assist, Grimsson now has 31 career points to lead all Urban Knights. Sutherland posted his 10th consecutive complete game as ART U's goalkeeper, collecting four saves in the process.

With the victory, Holy Names improves to 5-3-1 overall and 3-3 in the PacWest Conference. Goals from Goh and Horak put HNU over the top while Philip Poser added four saves and one goal allowed between the posts for the Hawks.

With the eight-match homestand now complete, ART U Men's Soccer heads out to Notre Dame de Namur on Oct. 4 to start off a four-match road swing. The Knights will also be in action against California Baptist (Oct. 13), Dominican (Oct. 18), and Fresno Pacific (Oct. 20).

“It's always tough on the road, but the team has been showing resilience and really battling lately,” Coach Rosaia said. “We will have that same mindset on the road and hopefully get the results we want.”
