ART U Dominates Chaminade 6-0 In Hawaii Opener

Box Score

Andrew Durano
Honolulu, HI – Like an ominous Hawaiian rainstorm, the Urban Knights scored once in the first half before a downpour of five goals led them to a 6-0 victory over Chaminade on Saturday. Jesus "Chava" Sanchez helped Academy of Art Men's Soccer get ahead in the 33rd minute then a Silverswords own goal was followed up by the quickest "hat trick" (fastest time between only three goals scored in a single contest) in Pacific West Conference history from Jonmundur Gretarsson. After another score from Sanchez, ART U had once again tied its program scoring record in the shutout.

With five shot attempts in the first 14 minutes, it was clear that the Urban Knights were going to be pushing the offense on a hot day out a St. Louis Field. Academy of Art broke through in the 33rd minute when Sanchez moved into the box on a touch pass from Leonardo Bartelle, finishing off the ball to the far post. That goal would hold up for the remainder of the half.

Early in the second, Chaminade was the victim of an own goal when Carlos Hernandez sent a cross from the right side in the 54th minute. The pass deflected off a Silverswords' defender into the left corner, giving ART U a 2-0 advantage at that point.

Joshua Leader, who ended up notching his first shutout with Academy of Art, made two solid saves before Gretarsson executed PacWest history. In the 76th minute, Jon "Jay" Eldon gently lobbed the ball over the defense to his Icelandic teammate who sent it home from 10 yards out to the far post. Just over a minute later, Aron Ekberg drove one across the field from the right side to Gretarsson who placed it over the Chaminade goal keeper to the far post.

Chava Sanchez
The ART U advantage swelled to 5-0 in the 80th minute when Andrew Durano powered a ball from 60 yards out to Gretarsson in a breakaway towards the goal. It made Gretarsson the owner of the quickest "hat trick" (time in between three goals scored only) in PacWest recorded history with the Knights' own Andrew "Boomer" Cruz having the fastest span of three goals in the match where he scored five at Chaminade in 2010.

Heading to the final buzzer, Academy of Art struck one last time with Sanchez catching a rebound from Thorvaldur "Thobbi" Sveinsson and putting it in for what would end up with the 6-0 final.

On the day, Gretarsson became the program's single-season points record holder after rising to 20 total points in 2013. He also tied Cruz for the single-season goals record with eight thus far. Assists went to Bartelle, Eldon, Ekberg, Durano, and Sveinsson while Leader finished off the shuout with six saves in a complete 90 minutes. Ekberg has tied Patrick Heinemann for the program career assists record. The Urban Knights are now 8-4-2 overall and 5-2-1 in PacWest play.

Chaminade drops to 0-14 overall and 0-10 in the PacWest, had much of its offensive work done by Dayton Sato who had six shots with three on frame. Goal keeper Nic Jetter finished with four saves and six goals allowed in his 90 minutes between the pipes.

The Urban Knights remain on the island of Oahu and will play BYU-Hawaii on Monday, Oct. 28 in Laie. That match is scheduled to begin at 3:00 PM HT (6:00 PM PT).
