Men’s Soccer Battles BYU-Hawaii To Gritty 0-0 Tie

Box Score

Malcolm McLellan
Laie, HI – The Urban Knights went toe-to-toe with BYU-Hawaii for a complete 110 minutes Monday with a 0-0 deadlock ending their emotional rollercoaster. Some of the teams' closest chances to score came in the two overtime periods and yet the squads were forced to split points when all was said and done.

"The guys put in a huge effort and it's obvious that playing at BYU-Hawaii is not an easy thing for anyone," head coach Mike Keller said. "We're the only PacWest team to take points off them on their home field this season. We have three games to play and still have a lot to play for."

A crucial moment came early on when Jonmundur Gretarsson got into a breakaway situation with BYUH goalkeeper Chris Pineda in the 11th minute. Gretarsson made a sliding flick shot attempt that would have found the net had it not been for a Seasider defender who kicked it just inches outside the right goal post.

Gretarsson would have another chance in the 18th minute, but this time Pineda was there for the save. On the other side of the field in the 25th minute, a Seasider dive at the ball as Joshua Leader emerged from the goal was stifled then a follow-up attempt by Jonathan Larsen rolled wide.

After carrying a 0-0 score into halftime, the Urban Knights were on the offensive early in the second period. Jesus "Chava" Sanchez received a ball played by Thorvaldur "Thobbi" Sveinsson in the 52nd minute, but BYUH's keeper was again there to make the save. Shortly thereafter, a situation materialized that would have seen Runar Gudbjartsson deliver a prime header chance, but it was waved off due to offsides.

Frederik Nagel
Leader then saw the three Seasider shot attempts on frame come in a 13-minute span midway through the half. Despite two dangerous headers in that stretch, one off a corner, the junior refused to let any ball get by him. Eventually, it became apparent that extra time was going to be necessary at a periodically hot and periodically wet BYU-Hawaii Soccer Field.

The first overtime was rather eventful for Academy of Art on the offensive end. In the 94th minute, Andrew Durano recovered a ball in 20 yards out, sent to Carlos Hernandez, then a beautiful slot pass found Leonardo Bartelle at the top of the box for an attempt that flew wide. Two shots then came from Frederik Nagel in the final four minutes with the last being saved by Pineda 13 seconds from the whistle.

BYUH's Bent Jenson had the only shot of the second overtime and it was extremely close. After Lennart Fleschhut crashed an initial dribble into the box, the pass went back to Jenson and his shot went over a sliding Leader, but kept carrying over the crossbar. In the waning seconds, Sanchez pursued a ball sent into the box by Patrick Heinemann and just could not reach it for what would have been a practically guaranteed goal from three yards out. The end result was a 0-0 tie.

ART U's record now sits at 8-4-2 overall and 5-2-2 in PacWest play. Four shots on goal came from four different Urban Knights including Bartelle, Gretarsson, Sanchez, and Nagel. Leader finished with three saves in a complete 110 minutes.

BYU-Hawaii's 5-2-2 PacWest record matches that of the Knights and they move to 7-3-3 overall. The Seasiders offered three shots on goal while Pineda tallied four saves in 110 minutes in goal.

Academy of Art next travels to Hilo for a pairing with the Vulcans this Thursday, Oct. 31 at Amauulu Field.

"I have a lot of respect for the Hilo coach so we are not underestimating that match and not Hawaii Pacific either," Coach Keller said. "No game on the islands is easy and we're going to be ready."
