Knights On Cloud Nine After Convincing Win

Box Score

Turlock, CA -- A year after the Academy of Art University women's tennis was held without a win against Cal State Stanislaus, they have turned the tables on the Warriors, winning their ninth in a row by a score of 8-1. The Urban Knights are now sitting at a 15-1 record before hitting the road to play three straight matches against opponents ranked in front of them next week.

The Knights took a quick lead after doubles play, when Nina Gajdosikova & Daniela Amelunge Antelo teamed up to defeat Davina Meza & McKenzy Harden by a score of 8-3 in first doubles. Jenny Johansson & Lucia Zavarcikova (9-7) won in second doubles, and Michelle Dandik Zaale & Kinga Kurczbuch rolled to an 8-0 victory in third doubles to put ART U on top 3-0 heading into singles play.

Gajdosikova battled for three sets but fell in the first singles spot, losing the first set 4-6, winning the second 7-5, and losing the tiebreaker 3-10 to give the Warriors their only point of the day. Dandik Zaale bounced back in second singles (6-1, 6-0) and Amelunge Antelo handled her business in third singles (6-4, 6-0) to give the Knights the five points needed for victory.

Jenny Johansson continued her singles winning streak by dropping Jessica Stokes in straight sets and straight games. Johansson's streak is now at 16, and she has only lost a total of four games in the last eight matches, while winning 96. Zavarcikova also dominated her opponent in a 6-0, 6-1 victory in the fifth spot, and Tamara Kenia defeated Aubree Brenda 6-2, 6-1 to secure the win.

The win ties the longest win streak in Academy of Art history across all sports, set by the women's basketball team last year. The Urban Knights will take on Cal State Los Angeles, Azusa Pacific, UC San Diego, and Point Loma Nazarene University next week.
