OPENING SERVE
The Urban Knights continued to dominate the Dominican Penguins, winning by a score of 8-1 to improve to 8-1 on the season. It marked the sixth straight victory against the Penguins, and with the win the Knights also started another streak this year. ART U won six straight to start this year, and the only blip on the season so far was a close-fought match with Fresno Pacific.
MAVERICKS COMING OFF SHUTOUT
Colorado Mesa has been up and down this year, with the Mavericks last match a dominant 9-0 victory. Mesa has only won two in a row twice this year, both when they were hosting the Maverick Duals, and both a pair of convincing victories over Dixie State (8-1) and Colorado Christian University (9-0). Michelle Phillips has won two straight for the Mavericks, and is one of two players with a winning record, joined by Nicole Lessley (5-3). Their first doubles team of Kaylee Davis & Shannen McNamara is an even 5-5.
KNIGHTS WITH THE HIGH FIVE
Academy of Art has been winning matches handily, and have solid singles records up and down the lineup, with none better than the fifth singles slot. The Knights have had six different players suit up in that slot, and are still perfect on the year, winning all nine matches at that position. In the second through fifth spots overall, the Urban Knights are 33-3, a whopping .917 winning percentage.
RED STORM ABATING
Dixie State is hosting the College Invitational coming off six straight losses, and the Knights will see them as their second match on the first day of the tournament. The Red Storm haven't had the easiest schedule, playing three ranked opponents in the last five matches. In their six-game slide, Dixie State has lost five of those matches by being shut out 9-0, including ranked opponents in #32 UC San Diego, #2 BYU Hawaii, and #15 Cal State Los Angeles.
STILL TWO UNBEATEN
Amal Ben El Hadj (9-0) and
Jenny Johansson (7-0) both continued their win streaks on the season, remaining the unbeatens for the Urban Knights in singles play. Ben El Hadj has wins at each of the second through fifth singles slots, while Johansson has won at third through sixth singles play. The two have teamed up in doubles play to also hold a perfect record at 2-0.
DIVISION I WILDCATS UP NEXT
Weber State has two separate three-game losing streaks on the year, and as the Urban Knights sole D-I opponent of the year, ART U is looking to take advantage. The last two matches of the year for the Wildcats have been close, as they notched a 4-3 win over Portland State on February 24 but are most recently coming off of a 4-3 loss to Idaho State.
WHAT'S UP NEXT
After the tournament in Utah, the Urban Knights will play four straight at home in a pair of doubleheaders. Academy of Art will host Notre Dame de Namur and Winona State on March 17 and then turn around to take on Montana State and Holy Names on March 22.
