Defense Helps Lift Knights Over Dominican

Box Score

San Francisco, CA — For the second time this season Saturday the Academy of Art University men's soccer team was forced to play down a man for more than 70 minutes, and for the second time this season, the Urban Knights came away with a victory in just that situation.

After a red card was issued to ART U in the 17th minute with the score still tied 0-0 against Dominican (Calif.) University, the Knights ramped up their defensive effort and finally broke through with a goal in the 53rd minute before tacking on an insurance goal for a 2-0 PacWest Conference victory at CCSF.

Following the ejection, the Urban Knights (4-5, 2-1 PacWest) fought off three shots from the Penguins (0-8-1, 0-3 PacWest) and still managed to outshoot them 8-3 in the half. The score would stay tied at zeros into the break.

It was junior forward Jake Walter who scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season 7:10 into the second stanza to put Academy of Art up 1-0. Walter received a quick touch pass from Alex Walsh who passed it backwards to Walter with his back to the goal, and Walter fired a shot from 25 yards out to find the left side of the net for the score.

Dominican had its number of chances in the second half. It earned seven corner kicks in the second half, including four in the final five minutes, but could not score. The Penguins also fired four shots in the final 3 1/2 minutes of the match.

Jay Eldon tacked on his third goal in the last two matches thanks to an open net left by the Penguins. Dominican tried to pack the box on their last corner kick of the afternoon, bringing goalkeeper Erik Anderson all the way across the field, but once the Urban Knights cleared it away, Eldon was left to shoot the ball from the other side of the mid-circle and the ball rolled slowly in to make it 2-0.

It was the second straight shutout victory for the Urban Knights and third on the year. This one went to senior goalkeeper Joshua Leader, who made one save in the match for the clean sheet.

Academy of Art heads out on the road for the first time in PacWest play next week for a match against Fresno Pacific in Fresno at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
