OPENING SERVE
The Urban Knights came home with a winning road trip after facing two top-25 opponents in three days and taking two of three on their swing through Southern California. ART U fell to Azusa Pacific but rebounded with very strong performances against Point Loma Nazarene University and UC San Diego to finish of the week. The Knights will now a lengthy homestand that lasts until April 6.
THREE DOWN, THREE UP FOR WEBER STATE
The Urban Knights faced Division I Weber State a little over a year ago at the Dixie State Invitational, and in an impressive display beat the Wildcats 6-3 on March 9, 2013. Weber has had a streaky year this season, and in their past six games have both a three-game losing streak and a three-game winning streak. The losses came amidst the start of the Big Sky conference play, falling to non-conference opponent Utah State as well as Big Sky foes North Dakota and Northern Colorado, all by scores of 6-1. The wins all came at the Dixie State Challenge, as they dispatched Colorado Mesa twice on back-to-back days before beating Dixie State on March 8 by a score of 5-2.
ZAVARCIKOVA ZIPPING ALONG
The Urban Knights played three matches in three days, two against opponents right on their heels in the national rankings, and thanks in part to
Lucia Zavarcikova, came away with a winning road trip. Zavarcikova fell in the opening match at Azusa but rebounded for a tough three-set victory at Point Loma and another good win against UCSD's Paula Chou, who at the time was ranked ninth in the region in singles play. In doubles play, Zavarcikova and
Jenny Johansson remain a perfect 7-0 on the season after, winning at Azusa (8-5), Point Loma (9-7), and UCSD (8-4).
PENGUINS COME IN ON HIGH NOTE
Golden Gate Bridge rival Dominican heads into Sunday's match with the Knights riding the momentum after a resounding 9-0 victory of NDNU and are 2-1 here in March, also taking a match from Cal State Stanislaus on March 1. The Knights took down the Penguins earlier this year, but Dominican has put themselves into the 10th spot in the West Region, according to the latest ITA rankings. ART U, ranked third in the West in that same poll, is 8-1 all-time against the Penguins, having won their last eight matches.
VICTORY IS OURS
Senior
Daniela Amelunge Antelo (7-0), junior
Kinga Kurczbuch (3-0), and freshman
Annika Schneider (9-0) are still unbeaten on the singles court this season, as the Knights as a whole have an impressive .830 (44-9) winning percentage. That mark is even better in doubles play, as ART U has posted a winning percentage of .852 (23-4). The team of
Jenny Johansson and
Lucia Zavarcikova is also a flawless 7-0, as the pair has excelled in the second doubles slot for a majority of the year.
NEXT FOR THE KNIGHTS
After a brief spring break, the Knights continue their homestand against UH Hilo (March 25), Cal State Los Angeles (March 27), and Dixie State (March 29), with all taking place at the San Francisco Tennis Club.
