Tennis Suffers First Loss At Azusa Pacific

Match Results

Azusa, CA --
On the first leg of their three-match road trip, the #13 Academy of Art University battled but suffered their first loss of the season to #16 Azusa Pacific University, a 5-3 affair at the Munson & Bavougian Tennis Complex. The Cougars rebounded in singles play to take the match.

"Today was definitely a learning experience for us," said head coach Beth Daub. "We came out a little slow and they had a strong showing. Tough first loss of the season but we are ready to take the courts again tomorrow and come out wanting it."

The Urban Knights fell in the first doubles, as Emily Harris & Danae Ingwaldson, ranked 20th in the country, defeated ART U's Nina Gajdosikova & Daniela Amelunge Antelo 8-3. Lucia Zavarcikova & Jenny Johansson beat back Lindsey Yeom & Kim Koetterheinrich 8-5 in second doubles, while Michelle Dandik Zaale & Annika Schneider dropped the same 8-5 score to Natalie Johnson & Stephanie Quan in the third slot.

"Number two doubles played a great pro set today," said Daub. "Singles was a dog fight all around. Each court battled it out and was close."

Singles was a battle all the way around, with no clear domination in any of the six spots. In the first singles slot, APU's Harris beat Gajdosikova in a close match, 7-5, 6-2. Johnson (APU) tripped up Zavarcikova 6-3, 7-5 in the second spot, and ART U's Dandik Zaale took Ingwaldson to three sets but fell 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 in the third spot.

Annika Schneider had the lone singles win for ART U, taking down Yeom 6-2, 6-3 in the fourth spot, and Amelunge Antelo was locked in a battle with Quan in the fifth, but even after a 6-2, 6-3 win in sixth singles by Johansson over Koetterheinrich the fifth singles match was left unfinished.

The Urban Knights will get right back to it tomorrow, taking on Point Loma Nazarene University tomorrow before finishing up the road trip at UC San Diego on Sunday.Â
