Knights Sweep Way To Third Place Finish

Match Results

Surprise, AZ -- Avenging one of their few losses from earlier this season, the Academy of Art University women's tennis team rolled to a 5-0 victory over Azusa Pacific University in the third-place game of the PacWest Conference Championship Tournament. The Knights swept doubles and were leading in all but one singles matches when they finished off the win and improved to 17-3 on the season.

"This whole tournament the girls played great and with such passion. Today was no different," said head coach Beth Daub. "They came out strong from the start and played amazing doubles in all three matches. Singles play was excellent as well on all courts. Dani and Jenny got us the wins to close out the sweep. The other courts were on their way to victories as well."

ART U quickly jumped out to a lead in doubles, as #1 doubles partners Daniela Amelunge Antelo & Nina Gajdosikova beat Emily Harris and Natalie Johnson 8-4. Annika Schneider & Michelle Dandik Zaale followed up in third doubles with an 8-2 win over Kim Koetterheinrich & Stephanie Quan, and to cap it all off Jenny Johansson & Lucia Zavarcikova defeated Lindsey Yeom & Danae Ingwaldson 8-4 to complete the doubles sweep.

Heading into singles play, the Urban Knights just needed two wins to clinch, and were well on their way when they took a 1-0 set lead in five of their six singles matches. With the cushion provided from doubles play, it came down to who finished first. Again showing off that their strength lies in their depth, it was Amelunge Antelo in fifth singles beating Kotterheinrich (6-1, 6-1) and Johansson in sixth beating Bethany Duval (6-2, 6-1) to secure the victory for Academy of Art.

The Knights finish up their regular season and will now await the decision of the NCAA Championship Committee to see if they will be advancing to Regionals, which would start on May 5 at a still to be determined site.
