Walter Scores as Men's Soccer Falls to HSU

Box Score

Chico, CA — Newcomer Jake Walter scored his second goal of the season Sunday for the Academy of Art University men's soccer team, but two first half goals by Humboldt State were enough to withstand a comeback effort as the Lumberjacks won 2-1 at University Soccer Stadium.

Walter struck for the Urban Knights (1-3) in the 52nd minute off a pass from freshman Alex Walsh, shooting high and right to cut the Lumberjacks' lead to one goal. Walter led ART U in shots with four, including two on goal. Academy of Art would outshoot Humboldt State 12-7 in the match.

Humboldt State took the lead 17 minutes, 5 seconds into the contest on a goal from Chuck Pitts. He took advantage of a short goal kick and beat Knights goalkeeper Alejandro Escobedo one-on-one with a shot that banged off the far post and in for a 1-0 lead.

The eventual game-winning goal would come via a penalty kick in the 35th minute. Braxton Griffin was fouled inside the box, giving him the opportunity to score. He would shoot low and left to give Humboldt State a 2-0 lead.

ART U heads to the North Bay next week to take on Sonoma State at 5 p.m. Thursday in Rohnert Park. The team will return home against Cal State Stanislaus at 11 a.m. Saturday at Boxer Stadium.
