SAN FRANCISCO — A clash of top-20 teams Friday went the way of the Academy of Art University women's tennis team, as the No. 11-ranked Urban Knights took down No. 17 UC San Diego at the San Francisco Tennis Club.

The Urban Knights (6-3) swept through the doubles competition in about 60 minutes to take an early 3-0 lead and never looked back. They clinched the match over the Tritons (11-8) early after taking a 5-0 advantage thanks to a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at No. 6 singles by junior Annika Schneider and a win by retirement for No. 48-ranked singles player senior Nina Gajdosikova over No. 8 Kyra Scott at No. 1.

Junior Michelle Dandik Zaale prevailed in a tough opening set at No. 3 singles, winning 7-5 before wrapping up her victory over Britta Mosser with a 6-1 triumph in set two. Senior Jenny Johansson came away with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Nava Nowamooz at No. 4.

Freshman Dorota Markowska played the longest singles match of the day at No. 5. After winning the first set 6-2 she fell to UCSD's Nousha Nowamooz in the second, 2-6. The two then played 16 points of a tiebreaker before Markowska came away with the 10-6 win.

Markowska stayed undefeated at doubles with partner Dandik Zaale, as the duo moved to 3-0 on the year with an 8-4 win at No. 3. The team of Gajdosikova and Schneider also stayed undefeated this spring, winning 8-5 at No. 1 doubles over UCSD's No. 14-ranked team of Scott and Mosser. Junior Lucia Zavarcikova teamed with Johansson to win 8-4 at No. 2, making the pair 4-1 this spring.

Academy of Art next travels to Turlock, Calif., to face Pacific West Conference opponent Cal State Stanislaus at noon Saturday.
