SURPRISE, Ariz. — One down, two to go.
The No. 11 ranked and third-seeded Academy of Art University women's tennis team moved one step closer to a Pacific West Conference championship Thursday with a 5-1 win over 24th-ranked and No. 6 seed Sonoma State in the first round of the PacWest Conference Championship Tournament at the City of Surprise Tennis and Racquet Club.
The victory moved the Urban Knights (12-4) into a semifinal matchup at 2 p.m. on Friday with No. 7 ranked and second-seeded Hawaii Pacific (19-5), 5-0 winners Thursday over No. 25 and seventh-seeded Point Loma.

Annika Schneider nearly made it an ART U sweep at doubles but were edged 9-7 by Leire Martinez and Jacquelyn Ward.
The Knights wrapped up the first round victory in singles with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph from Zavarcikova at No. 2, a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 4 from Johansson and a 6-2, 6-1 victory by Schneider at No. 6.
Other results from the PacWest Championship Tournament's first day included top-seeded and No. 3-ranked BYU-Hawaii sweeping No. 8 seed Holy Names 5-0. It took a marathon tiebreaker in doubles for No. 4 seed and 18th-ranked Azusa Pacific to grab a 2-1 edge over No. 5 seed and 22nd-ranked Cal State LA, but the Golden Eagles would come back with four victories in singles to win the match 5-3.
Semifinal round and consolation action all begins at 2 p.m. Friday.
