Men's Soccer Outdueled by Sea Lions 2-0

SAN DIEGO – Academy of Art (2-7-1, 2-3-0 PacWest) and Point Loma (3-4-3, 2-3-0 PacWest) headed into Thursday's match tied in the PacWest standings at 2-2 apiece. However, the Sea Lions managed to outduel the Urban Knights by a score of 2-0.

Things looked even throughout the opening half until the 31st-minute. The Sea Lions opened up the scoring when Jorge Navarro received a cross in front of the net and tapped it past sophomore goalkeeper Kevin Mendez. Point Loma's defense was strong as well, only allowing the Urban Knights to take two shots (one on goal).

The second half was similar to the first as both teams fought to control the possession. The Knights' offense was held to a standstill however, as ART U was only able to get off one shot. That opportunity to score came with 8:40 remaining in the game. The Knights passed to freshman forward Philippe Zamignani at the top of the box. The Venice, Calif. native powered a shot towards the right corner of the goal, but Point Loma's Michael Lambert managed to get his fingertips on the ball, forcing it out wide. PLNU added their second goal just five minutes later, courtesy of Nico Tagaloa.

"We had a really competitive first half today," said head coach Mike Keller. "We almost scored before half and almost equalized before their second goal as well."

Academy of Art's next game will come against Azusa Pacific on Saturday at noon. The Cougars are yet another team to enter the Thursday tied at 2-2 in the conference. However, APU and Notre Dame de Namur will face off Thursday evening at 5:00 p.m.

"We are looking to progress, finish our chances, and make APU chase the game," said Keller.
