No. 25 Academy of Art vs. Domincan Final Results
SAN FRANCISCO – No. 25 Academy of Art women's tennis wasted no time in showing that they were prepared for the 2017 season to begin, sweeping Domincan 9-0.
In first doubles, No. 5-ranked twins
Alma Thell-Lenntorp and
Klara Thell-Lenntorp made quick work of their opponents with an 8-4 victory. Making her debut in an ART U uniform, sophomore
Monika Stanikova paired up with senior
Annika Schneider in second doubles and they also defeated their adversaries by a score of 8-4. In the third slot, sophomore
Paula Alcantara matched up with
Mariacristina Andrisani who was also competing in her first match as an Urban Knight. The duo defeated Penguins Karlsen Solveig and Cori Beeby 8-3.
As the match moved over to singles, Academy of Art needed just two wins to come away with their first victory of the year. Instead, all six Knights triumphed as five individuals never surrendered more than three games in a set. In first singles, Stanikova picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win, Andrisani won 6-2, 7-5 in the second position, in third, Schneider gave up just one game, 6-1, 6-0 and in fourth singles, Alcantara defeated her opponent 6-3, 6-2. No. 34 K. Thell-Lenntorp also only surrendered one game with a 6-1, 6-0 win and No. 48 A. Thell-Lenntorp went undefeated, sweeping Beeby 6-0, 6-0.
"It was great to see Monika out on the court with us after spending a year on the sidelines," said head coach Nicole Briceno-Garzon. "She finally got that moment and came out came out strong in singles. Similar to Monika, Mariacristina has been dreaming of this moment for some time. She had to battle back from being down 5-2, but she competed well and I am happy to see that from her."
This is the fifth-consecutive season that ART U has opened their season with a win and they will look to start the season 2-0 when they head to Sonoma State on Sunday, February 12. First serve is at 1:00 p.m.
"The team definitely received some confidence from this match," said Briceno-Garzon. "We just need to continue believing in ourselves and trusting the process."
