Hawaii Roadtrip Concludes With Chaminade Over ART U

HONOLULU – Up against a Chaminade team that sported the best overall record in the PacWest Conference by the end of the night, Academy of Art volleyball sustained a 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-18) loss to the Silverswords inside McCabe Gymnasium on Monday night.

Now two-time PacWest Freshman of the Week middle blocker Jillian Wheaton got ART U started with its first kill of the match, but from an early 5-4 score, the Silverswords worked to gain a 14-7 advantage and eventually won the opening set 25-14.

In the second set, no more than two points separated the teams until Chaminade moved up 19-16 and went on to take a 25-18 victory after Wheaton and junior opposite Kiersten Kerch each provided kills late.

A tandem block by Wheaton and Kerch, a kill by sophomore outside hitter Ashley Pawlak, and a solo block off the hands of sophomore middle blocker Sadie Emery gave ART U an initial 4-2 lead and the teams would match step for step until the score was tied 15-15. A burst by the Silverswords set them up with a 23-16 advantage and, despite a pair of scores, the end result was a 25-18 triumph for the home team and a sweep.

Monday's result puts ART U at 0-18 on the year and 0-10 in conference. Pawlak amassed a team-high 11 kills while Kerch came off the bench to deliver six kills with a season-best .455 hitting percentage. Freshman setter Picabo Reinhold dealt out 12 assists and redshirt senior libero Lyndsay Mlynar totaled 11 digs.

Chaminade rises to 12-3 overall and 6-3 in PacWest competition. Both Claire Zanon and Alana Handy had identical numbers with 11 kills and nine digs apiece to lead the Silverswords.

With its Hawaii roadtrip now complete, Academy of Art will remain in the Bay Area for the remainder of October. The Knights start a three-match homestand with Notre Dame de Namur on Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. inside Kezar Pavilion.
