Biola Accomplishes Sweep In Knights' PacWest Home Opener

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – An energetic crowd helped Academy of Art volleyball in its first Pacific West Conference home match of the season, but Biola ended up coming away with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-19) victory inside Dominican's Conlan Rec Center on Friday night.

Anyone's first set in the early going, a pair of kills by redshirt senior middle blocker Safua Elisaia made it just an 8-7 lead for the Eagles who followed with a 7-1 run. That gap was partially closed by the Urban Knights' 6-1 response capped by sophomore middle blocker Sadie Emery's back-to-back put-aways. A 17-15 score got out of hand, however, as Biola scored on eight of the last nine points to win 25-16.

A 5-0 push started the second set for the visitors and soon the lead was 11-4. Academy of Art steadily came back to within three points at 17-14 on junior opposite Kiersten Kerch's kill, but like the opening frame, eight of the final 11 scores went the way of Biola and they took a 2-0 lead on their 25-17 end result.

Though the Eagles went ahead 7-2 to begin the third, sophomore outside hitter Ashley Pawlak provided multiple kills during a 5-1 rebuttal. The remainder of the set was relatively even and just one point separated the teams at 19-18. From there, the trend continued as BU rattled off six of the next seven points for a 25-19 final and the sweep.

On the year, Academy of Art drops to 0-12 overall and 0-4 in PacWest play. Freshman setter Picabo Reinhold finished with her second double-double of the year, collecting 24 assists and a season-best 11 digs while Pawlak held the team's highest kill total with eight.

Biola improves to 6-4 in 2018 and 2-1 in conference after being led by Sierra Bauder's 12 kills.

ART U will turn around and play host to Concordia tomorrow at 3 p.m. inside the familiar confines of Kezar Pavilion.
