SAN FRANCISCO – Academy of Art started PacWest play not with a whimper, but a bang. The Urban Knights defeated Azusa Pacific 2-1 on Thursday morning with a game-winning goal by senior forward
Anissa Wilson. Tied for first with APU coming into the match, ART U now sits alone atop the PacWest table. Â
With her ninth goal of the season and 15th of her career, Wilson moved into a tie for second place with Rea Laudat on the career goals list. Wilson broke the single-season goals record
earlier in the season, and now needs just four more goals to break the career goals record of 18 set by Hannah Emmett in 2013.Â
The scoring opened in the ninth minute when APU's Jordan Hill lobbed a ball over the keeper and into the net from a couple yards outside the penalty box for a 1-0 Cougar lead.Â
ART U did not take long to equalize. Junior midfielder
Sydney Cooke put the Knights on the board in the 24th with her third goal of the season. Cooke received a ball in open space, dribbled to the middle of the field, and launched a shot from 25 yards out that curved beautifully to the top left corner to tie the match at one.
Less than one minute into the second half the Urban Knights scored the go-ahead, and eventual game-winning goal. A familiar play materialized as sophomore forward
Brooklyn Morera crossed in an expertly placed ball in front of the goal box. Wilson put a nice header on the ball and drove it to the top right corner before the keeper had a chance to react.Â
With over 43 minutes to play against a strong offense, the ART U defenses buckled down and shut down the Cougars the remainder of the match for a 2-1 victory. Junior goalkeeper
Lara Pflicke notched four saves in the process and improved to 3-2 on the year while sophomore defender
Britney Flint recorded another full 90 minutes to maintain her streak of playing every minute of every match.Â
After the 2-1 win over APU, Academy of Art improved to 5-2-1 overall and 1-0 in conference. The Urban Knights will continue their PacWest homestand with Concordia on Oct. 10 starting at 10:30 a.m.Â
