KNIGHT WATCH
Junior forward
Adrian Cekala is coming off his first goal of the season versus Stanislaus State on
Sept. 8. The sensational goal came in the 57th minute when he sprinted down the left side of the field and beat a defender to the end line where he slid to take control of the ball. Cekala dribbled into the box, incredibly hurdled and dodged a slide-tackling defender, then perfectly wedged a ball between the keeper and left post to give ART U a 1-0 lead.
BATTLE OF THE BAYS
The Otters come into their match with the Urban Knights a perfect 2-0. CSUMB opened their 2019 with a 1-0 overtime victory against Holy Names, after regulation ended in a scoreless tie and senior Walmer Martinez ended the match with a golden goal in the 97 minute. In their most recent match the Otters defeated Dominican by a score of 3-2. CSUMB will have have one more match before they face ART U, against Texas Permian Basin on Sept. 13. Walmer Martinez and Adrian Rebollar lead the offense and are tied at the top of the table with four points each. Martinez's points come on two goals while Rebollar has one goal and an assist. Luis Lopez rounds out the goal scorers and Penner Jacob the points, with a single goal and assist respectively. Academy of Art is 2-2 all-time against CSUMB and won their last meeting on
Sept. 1, 2018 1-0 on a golden goal.
SEE YOU SOON, SAINTS
The Saints are 1-0-1 to start the season after a 2-2 tie with Regis in their opening match and a 5-0 rout of Adams State. SMU played both matches at home, in Lacey, Washington and will have another pair of home matches versus Pacific on Sept. 12 and CSU Dominguez Hills on Sept. 14, before they take on the Knights. Sebastian Navarro is the Saints leading scorer with four points on one goal and two assists. Brandon Madsen is second with three points on one goal and one assist, and four other Saints are tied for third with two points. The teams have only meant one other time in their programs' history, on
Sept. 12, 2013 when ART U defeated the Saints 2-1.
WHAT'S UP WILDCATS?
Chico State has only played one game thus far, but they are 1-0. On Sept. 5, the Wildcats took down Western Washington 2-1 with goals in the 27th and 77th minute. Chico was scheduled for a match against Seattle Pacific on Sept. 7, but it was ruled no-contest due to lightning. They will take on Concordia Portland on Sept. 12 and Fresno Pacific on Sept. 20, both at home, prior to facing ART U. The Wildcats edge out the Urban Knights in the all-time series, with two wins to zero, although the teams tied in their latest meeting on Sept. 10, 2015.
GOLDEN GOAL GOES THE WAY OF THE WARRIORS
After jumping out to an early lead on a spectacular goal by junior forward
Adrian Cekala, Stanislaus State equalized late in the second half before winning the match on a golden goal on
Sept. 8.
LOOKING AHEAD
The trio of non-conference matches will lead Academy of Art into PacWest play, starting with Notre Dame de Namur on Sept. 26 at 4 p.m. at Koret Field in Belmont, California.
