2020 ITA Scholar-Athletes & All-Academic Teams
TEMPE, Ariz. – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced their Scholar-Athletes and All-Academic Teams on Tuesday and the Academy of Art women's tennis squad was represented in both award categories. The Urban Knights as a whole were named an ITA All-Academic Team, while freshman
Aitana Comas Adam was honored as an ITA Scholar-Athlete.
"First, we want to thank the professors, tutors, and the athletics administration for their continuous support on achieving academic excellence," head coach
Clarisse Baca. "Almost every student-athlete on the team improved their grades by the second semester and I am very proud that they are being recognized for their efforts at the national level."
To be named an ITA All-Academic Team, all varsity letter winners are factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year, and the team must have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or above on a 4.00 scale. As a team, the Urban Knights got off to a 4-1 start to the season, aiming to not only make it back to the Pacific West Conference Championship, but be in contention to win.
The requirement to be named an ITA Scholar-Athlete is that a student-athlete must have a GPA of at least a 3.5 on a 4.0 scale for the academic year. In her first year as a Web Design & New Media student, Comas finished with a 3.87 GPA in the classroom. With the racket, Comas notched a 4-3 record on the court in singles play.
"Aitana is one of the most devoted students on the team," said Baca. "To receive this honor as an international student and as a freshman is a great accomplishment."
