KNIGHT WATCH
Victory has been a sweet taste for the Urban Knights early in the season, starting with a
thrilling 4-3 overtime victory over FPU in which senior forward
Adrian Cekala netted his first two goals in timely fashion.
Staring at a 3-2 deficit, Cekala buried the penalty kick earned by sophomore forward
Gilly Miller to force overtime before netting a dazzling golden goal to the far post off of a through ball from freshman midfielder
Elvis Mensah.Â
Â
ART U followed up the thrilling season opener with a
solid performance in a 2-1 victory over Dominican, the first coming from junior defender
Armando Rivera in his first game of the season on a header from a perfectly-placed corner kick by junior midfielder
Gilli Kristjansson.
What would become the game-winning goal was tallied early in the second half by Cekala on a low shot from just outside the box after a great defensive interception and assist from sophomore midfielder
William Mychaltchouk. Â
Â
The three goals in the first two games
earned Cekala the first PacWest NorCal Player of the Week award of the season, the first such honor of his career. In all, four Urban Knights
have reached the scoresheet in the goals column, while Mensah leads the team with a pair of assists.Â
Â
RECORD CHASING
Not only did his goals earn conference recognition, but they have also moved Cekala solely into seventh place in
ART U history for career points with 24. Just ahead of Cekala in sixth place is Andrew "Boomer" Cruz (25; 2010-11) and a tie for fourth place at 28 points between Jonmundur Gretarsson (2011-13) and Patrick Heinemann (2010-13). Cekala also moves up
the ART U career goals list, jumping from a tie for sixth place into a tie for fourth place with Cruz at 11 goals. Third place Frederik Nagel (2011-14) sits one goal ahead with 12, while second place Kristof Urbanyi (2012-15) checks in with 15.Â
Â
HANGING TOUGH WITH HOLY NAMES
It will be the first time out this season for Holy Names when they take the pitch on Thursday, as they've had their first two scheduled contests postponed. The Hawks are looking to improve upon a 4-12-2 campaign in 2019, and will charge into battle under Head Coach Evan Sassano in his third season. While ART U leads the all-time series 4-3-2, it was HNU that got the best of the Urban Knights in last season's battle.
Â
FLYING OVER THE SUNBIRDS
It was a win last time out for FPU over The Master's College by a final of 2-0, their first of the season after suffering the overtime loss at the hands of the Knights to begin the year. D'Andre Renteria checks in as the squad's top goal scorer with two, while Felipe Souza has tied him for the team lead in points with a goal and a pair of assists. FPU leads the all-time matchup, 9-1.Â
