KNIGHT WATCH
Redshirt senior Jossart Jodito became the newest Urban Knight to score a goal after finding the back of the net in the 17th minute in ART U's most recent match against Stanislaus. Junior defender Abraham Valencia earned his second assist of the season as he crossed the ball into the box past a diving keeper with Jodito on the other end beating his defender for the tap in goal, which puts Valencia ranked third amongst PacWest Conference players in assists. Freshman midfielder Joey Glaab ranks tied for first in the PacWest Conference in goals, and sophomore goalkeeper Jaiden Brooks ranks second in saves per game. Senior midfielder Gilly Miller, the ART U single-season record holder in both points (26) and goals (10) from just last year, made his 2023 debut against Stanislaus recording his first minutes, just in time for the Knights' upcoming matches.
WRESTLING WITH WARRIORS
Without losing a match since Sept. 2, Jessup (4-3-2) has recently scored a pair of ties and a win in their most recent contests. The Warriors' upcoming match with the Knights will be their third-straight home event, closing out their non-conference play with ART U before their GSAC matches start up. Pacing the team in goals and points is Diego Nunez, netting six goals with a total of 13 points on 20 shots (13 on goal). Starting in seven of the eight matches in goal for Jessup is Gerardo Perez Plata, making 19 saves on 35 shots faced for a .679 save percentage and a 1.20 goals against average. Leading the all-time matchup between the two teams is the Urban Knights with a 2-1 record.
HOSTING VISITING VULCANS
UH Hilo comes into their match with Academy of Art with an overall record of 2-2 coming off a narrow 1-0 loss against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sept. 18. A 2-2 non-conference record started with another loss against Western Oregon and then turned into a pair of wins over SF State and Cal State San Marcos. The Vulcans so far this season have played fairly close, with their biggest goal differential being just two. ART U and UH Hilo currently hold the same amount of goals scored (4), with the Vulcans coming from four separate players opposed to the Knights' two. Aidan Santos is the leader in points for the Vulcans and is the man up front ready to strike with his six shots. The Urban Knights are 6-9 all time against the Vulcans coming into the upcoming matchup.
SCOLDING THE SILVERSWORDS
Currently looking for their first win of their 2023 season, the Chaminade Silverswords will come to the city after a visit to UH Hilo and Fresno Pacific. The 'Swords hold a 0-3-1 record overall, coming off a tie with Hawai'i Pacific and three straight losses to No. 6 Northwest Nazarene, SF State, and Cal State East Bay. So far without a win, Chaminade has managed to score a goal in all four of their matches this season and have avoided getting shut out. Much like the Vulcans, the 'Swords have had all their goals come from different players, including one from Owen Caba who leads the team in points (4) with his two assists. Brandon Yasue has recorded the most amount of time in goal playing in three games, giving up seven goals with a 2.33 goals against average, while recording 11 saves on 34 shots faced. The Knights are 9-7 all time against the Silverswords with their last win being a 4-0 victory in 2021.
SQUASHING THE SHARKS
The Sharks (1-3-2) will face the Urban Knights in what will be their third PacWest Conference matchup, following their future trips to Dominican and Fresno Pacific. Without a win since Sept. 7, the Sharks are coming off a 1-1 tie with Chaminade and two losses against Stanislaus State and Cal State East Bay. With the loss of Gerrit Arzberger, their leading goal scorer from last season, the Sharks have switched up the offense with goals coming from six different players already this early in the season, and being led by Leandro Weingartner with his two goals and two assists on his 11 shots. Weingartner is the current leader in points (6) with Jude Boyd's four not far behind. Connor Margo has been in goal every minute this season for the Sharks, with his 20 saves on 55 shots faced, coming out to a .690 save percentage with a 1.55 goals against average giving up nine goals so far.
EARLY GOAL NOT ENOUGH FOR MEN'S SOCCER IN TURLOCK
En route to Academy of Art men's soccer recording a season-high 14 shots, the first goal in the ART U career for redshirt senior forward Jossart Jodito helped the Urban Knights hold a one-score lead for over 50 minutes, but Stanislaus State managed to find the back of the net three times in the second half to prevail 3-1 under the lights at Warrior Stadium on Tuesday evening.
LOOKING AHEAD
After the homestand, the Urban Knights will take a short two-game trip down to Southern California to match up against Concordia on Oct. 7 at 3:30 p.m. and Azusa Pacific on Oct. 9 at 5 p.m.
