Track Competes in Duyst Invitational

The Academy of Art Track & Field team traveled to Turlock, CA this past weekend to compete in the Kim Duyst Invitational, hosted by CSU Stanislaus. The Urban Knights participated in a full day of events with nearly 650 student-athletes and 24 teams at the Al Brenda Track at Warrior Stadium.

AAU coaches and players have much to be proud of, "Overall, the Academy of Art Track team had a successful day with many members bettering their marks significantly from last week", said Coach Anne Ricketts.

In the women's competition, Junior Jazmin White had a strong showing this weekend, she finished the day sixth in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.85. She then placed seventh in the 200 meters with a time of 26.03. This is her first season as an Urban Knight and in her inaugural meet last week at the Cal State Stanislaus Open White garnered her first top 10 finish in the 200 meters, placing sixth with a time of 26.70. Coach Ricketts had this to say of White, "Jazmin is proving herself to be an integral and versatile player for the team."

In her first hurdle race of the season, freshman Emily Allis placed  fourth in the 100 meter hurdles in 16.25. Allis was up against top athletes from the CCAA, including runners from Chico State and Cal Poly Pomona.  Chico State dominated the CCAA team scoring standings with 205 points while Cal Poly Pomona was second with 169 points.

Other highlights include a tenth place finish by Irinel Zamfir in the 800 and 1500 meter run.

On the men's side, sophomore Geoffrey Cheruiyot had his second best 800 meter run of the season. He shaved four seconds off his time from last weeks meet to take fourth place and finish in 1:56.1. He barely out  ran his teammate Kennedy Kurgat who finished in fifth place with a time of 1:56.70, " Geoffrey is having an excellent season so far, and his confidence is growing each week", Said Coach Ricketts.

Other stand out performances were made by Daveson Marindich  and Amos Maru who placed third and seventh respectfully in the men's 5000 meters.

The Urban Knights will take this week to prepare for the UC Davis Open which takes place on March 13.
