Davis, CA--- The Academy of Art Track and Field team traveled to Davis, CA to take part in the Woody Wilson Classic hosted by the UC Davis Aggies Saturday April 17. The Day was filled with many highlights and personal bests.
In the men's 800
Kennedy Kurgat won overall with a PR of 1:54.23, while
Simon Mutai finished fourth in 1:55.58 and
Joey Villasenor placed ninth in 1: 57.80. All three runners achieved PR's in the 800. Assistant Coach Anne Ricketts said this of the 800m runners, "The men in the 800 were really aggressive and took control of their races which was great to see. That's how we want them to run, fast and in control regardless of outside circumstances".
Kristen Lee got a PR in the 100 meters finishing in 12.66, while
Ezra Tacosa ran a11.76 in the men's 100m dash which also garnered him with a season PR.
Aric Armon was 20th in 200m dash in 22.98 and ran a 50.06 in the 400m dash.
Daveson Marindich finished second overall in the men's 5k beating out 16 other runners from UC Davis and Chico State, to name a few, in 14.57 and teammate
Amos Maru placed right behind him in 15:09.
"Overall, as a team it's very encouraging to see such a young team [as ourselves] step up and place so high against other DI and DII schools this early in the game", Ricketts said.
Mark Bretan who is coming back from mono had a solid performance in the men's 1500 in 4:24 and captain
Shawn Daut also coming back from injury ran a 4:15 in the 1500. Assistant Coach Anne Ricketts is sure these times will continue to come down as they continue to get back in shape.
Hannah Otey nabbed her first top 10 finish in the discus finishing 7th overall with a throw 9.70 meters.
Head Coach Victor Hudson was pleased with his teams' performances stating, "Today was a good meet with some solid competition. It gives us a good tune up for next week at the Cal Berkeley Brutus Hamilton meet where we will face some major DI competition."
He went on to add, " Some athletes were nursing injuries so we didn't run them out today to get them healthy for next week. With three weeks left in season, we are gearing up to see times drop. But the team is working really well together and is a family so its encouraging to see how they all push and motivate each other from week to week."
It was not only AAU athletes who stepped up to the plate, Assistant Coach Anne Ricketts participated in the UC Davis Alumni mile race and was the first female to cross the finish line.
The Urban Knights will participate in the UC Berkeley Brutus Hamilton Invitational next week, 4/23 - 4/24.
