Sacramento, CA--- Briana Stewart continues to excel with ever meet the Urban Knights compete in, The Sophomore from Oakland, CA took the top spot twice this afternoon at the American River Invitational hosted by American River College.
Stewart placed first in the women's 100 high hurdles, and first in the triple jump. On the track she was the only female athlete to break 14 seconds in the 100m hurdles, as she clocked with a time of 13.93. She took her momentum to the field and out jumped the competition , her 37" 11.5' jump placed her in first for the second time of the day.
Sprints were the focus today for the Urban Knights, "Since we competed in the Distance Carnival last week, we wanted to really focus on our sprinters today", said Assistant Coach Anne Ricketts. They did just that, a handful of athletes tied and achieved personal bests today. One athlete in particular was
Amos Maru who had a breakthrough day.
Maru finished the men's 1500m run in 4:02 which was first in his heat, (finishing seventh overall). He also achieved a personal record in the 800m run, he finished in 1:58. In the 1500m run his teammates
Daveson Marindich and
Geoffrey Cheruiyot were nipping at his heels finishing in 4:05 and 4:10 respectively.
The women had some highlights of their own in the 1500m run.
Irinel Zamfir finished her race in 4:58 which placed her seventh in her heat.
Denisse Correa(5:18) and
Laura Wolfe(5:22) each beat out runners from Cal State Stanislaus and Sacramento State.
On the field
Hannah Otey placed 12th in her first attempt at the discus, the freshman threw 106 feet.
The men's 4x400 meter relay (
Villasenor,
Kurgat,
Cheruiyot and
Armon) placed first in their heat with a time of 3:25. While the women's 4x100m relay (
Allis,
Lee,
White,
Stewart) time of 49.13 was good enough to secure them a sixth place finish.
Individually
Aric Armon broke 50 seconds for the first time this season in the 400m dash, he placed third in his heat with 49.72. While
Jazmin White and
Kristen Lee each broke 26 seconds in the 200m dash finishing in 25.69 and 25.96 respectfully.
"We had some nice performances from the team today. Times are coming down and that's what we want at this point in the season", said Head Coach Victor Hudson.
Hudson added, "We have next weekend off, so now we are looking forward to Woody Wilson in 2 weeks at UC Davis. This week off gives us some time to really focus on training and get two solid weeks under our belts to get some new personal records "
