ART U Track & Field Starts Off Season With Historic Performance At Jacksons Open

2011 Boise State Jacksons Open & Multi's Results

Nampa, ID -- Records were made to be broken.

The Academy of Art University track and field team had a memorable Saturday afternoon at the Boise State Jacksons Open & Multi's, its first indoor meet of the 2011-12 campaign, with numerous new records set and personal bests including a historic 8.21 performance by junior Briana Stewart in the 60m hurdles which qualified her for the USA Indoor Track & Field Championships in February.

“Overall it was a pretty phenomenal opening to a season,” head coach Charles Ryan said. “It was the first meet of our season and easily the best our program has ever had. We broke so many school records and people don't even pay much attention to indoor track in December so for kids to be where they are at right now is phenomenal. I couldn't be happier with the group that we took and their performance. They competed extremely well.”

For the women, it was a total of four indoor ART U records broken with Stewart's first place 60m hurdles effort at the forefront. Stewart was far from finished, however. She would go on to knock .10 seconds off her previous mark in the 60m (also a school record) by turning in a new 7.59 mark. Then, in the triple jump, Stewart took third individually with a 38-10.5 performance that ranks second for her indoor career.

Other Urban Knights excelled in the sprint events as well with junior Tiara Sims securing a 57.42 time in the 400m to take second overall and become the new school record holder by over .30 seconds. Sophomore teammate Chantel King had ART U's top finish in the 200m (26.22) which earned her the fifth best time in program history.

In the 1000m, senior Kristen Sanzari came through with a new record for Academy of Art by way of a 3:04.73 time which also earned her fourth overall. In the culminating event for the women's competition, the 4x400m, Sims and King teamed up with senior Jazmin White and junior Dominique Berry to win the race, putting forth a 3:53.48 mark that was second in school history.

Five new records were also set on the men's side highlighted by a 6.82 mark by freshman Jaylon Hicks in the 60m. Hicks' first place finish smashed the previous ART U record by over .30 seconds. Hicks would also take fifth in the 200m with a 22.48 time.

Another Urban Knight, senior Pearson Crichlow, had two impressive sprinting performances. For his first trick, he turned in a 48.95 performance in the 400m to earn first overall and then snatched second individually with his 21.80 time in the 200m. Crichlow became the new school record-holder in both events, improving upon the previous 400m time by over two full seconds.

Sophomore Reneilwe Aphane, highly regarded for his jumping ability, demonstrated his talents Saturday with a first place finish in the triple jump (47-6.50). In just his first competition of the season, Apahne bested the previous record of 47-5 set last year.

On the distance circuit, senior tandem Amos Maru and Daveson Marindich went to work with Maru setting a new Academy of Art record (2:38.91) in the 1000m. Marindich closely followed his teammate, reminiscent of the recent cross country season, with a 2:41.44 mark.

The final team event of the afternoon featured Crichlow, sophomore Marquis Scruggs, junior Phil Dorsett, and junior Erik Piedad combining for the 4x400m. The foursome produced a 3:28.94 time, good for third in the record books.

After completing this early December meet, ART U resumes its indoor season on Jan. 20 with a pair of competitions. The Urban Knights are set to participate in University of New Mexico's Cherry & Silver Invitational (Jan. 20-21) in Albuquerque, NM and Run For The Dream (Jan. 20)  in Fresno, CA.
