Berry Sets New Hurdles Record, Aphane Leaps Into New Territory At Aggie Open

2012 UC Davis Aggie Open Results

Davis, CA – The ART U Track and Field team offered another strong showing at the 2012 Aggie Open hosted by Division I UC Davis on Saturday. Among the highlights for Academy of Art out at Woody Wilson Track were junior Dominique Berry's new program record in the 400m hurdles as well as an impressive triple jump by sophomore Reneilwe Aphane to launch him atop the record list once again.

Berry, who was part of two new ART U relay records Saturday, fought hard in earning her 2nd place result out of 19 other athletes in the 400mH to become the Urban Knights' new record holder (1:02.22). She contributed one of the four legs in Academy of Art's new top mark in the 4x100m with juniors Vashti Thomas and Briana Stewart as well as senior Jazmin White. That same quartet would come through with another program record in the 4x400m (3:53.13) while Berry also finished 10th in the 100mH.

The top performances through three sprint events included Thomas' 24.76 time in the 200m dash that was good for 2nd overall out of 27 competitors along with her 12.45 mark in the 100m dash which placed her 9th out of 33. Junior Tiara Sims excelled with a 58.32 and 6th place finish in the 400m dash.

For the men, Aphane provided an exciting follow-up to his new program record in the triple jump last week in Turlock. The sophomore leapt to a 49-10 in the triple jump on Saturday for the second-farthest mark of the day. His distance surpassed ART U's previous high in the event which Aphane himself set.

Several Urban Knights distance runners were also in action at the Aggie Open including seniors Amos Maru and Daveson Marindich. Maru posted a solid 3:55.83 in the 1500m which placed him 6th out of 46 competitors. Marindich one-upped his countryman Maru in the 3000m, however, with an 8:24.40 (2nd of 48) that was the second fastest time of his career.

Among the sprinter highlights was junior Stephen Peevy's first action at Academy of Art and he did not disappoint with a 49.17 time in the 400m dash that earned him a 2nd place finish out of 42 overall. The mark ranks second on ART U's All-Time Record list.

Up next for the Urban Knights will be the San Diego State Aztec Invitational to be held Mar. 15-17 in San Diego, CA.
