Battling through relentless rain and cold temperatures, one group from the Academy of Art University track and field team competed in San Francisco State's 2012 Johnny Mathis Invitational out at Cox Stadium Saturday. Despite difficult conditions, junior Briana Stewart still posted impressive times in the 100m dash to highlight the day. With much more favorable weather for a track meet in southern California, the Pasadena Games hosted by Pasadena City College saw new ART U program records set by the women's track and field relay teams as well as the new top two times for the men's 100m dash.

Pasadena, CA -- The tandem of freshman Jaylon Hicks and Emil Tolliver spearheaded the Knights' sprinting efforts at the Pasadena Games. In the 100m dash, Hicks captured 2nd of 18 competitors with a time of 10.63 while Tolliver came in 5th sporting a 10.73 mark. Those two times both rise to the top as Academy of Art's new All-Time records.

Junior Stephen Peevy produced a 49.29 result in the 400m dash which placed him 6th out of 16 other runners. His time ranks as the third lowest in program history.

The men's outing was also highlighted by another solid mark in the triple jump from sophomore Reneilwe Aphane who took 6th out of 21 with his 46-6.25 distance.

For the women, both relay teams shined. Senior Jazmin White teamed with junior Vashti Thomas, junior Dominique Berry, and sophomore Chantel King to earn the program's top time in the 4x100m (47.01) and the 4x400m (3:50.44).

Those athletes would excel individually as Thomas produced the day's second farthest triple jump (40-6) which also serves as the second in ART U history. She would also take 3rd in the 100m hurdles with a 13.92 mark (3rd on program's All-Time Record list).

White also sprinted to a new school record in the 400m with her outdoor lifetime best of 57.39.

In the 400m hurdles, Berry posted a 1:02.27 result to capture 4th of 13 other runners. The time was second for Academy of Art track and field.

San Francisco, CA -- In the Johnny Mathis Invitational, Stewart led the way on the women's side by qualifying for the finals of the 100m with a 12.36 mark which placed her 4th out of 34 in the event. That time ranked second on the ART U All-Time list and she followed that up with a 12.45 in the final race.

“Today, given the weather and these conditions, our focus was on competing in races not times or marks,” assistant coach Ben DeLand said. “We were just taking the weather for what it was and just racing competitors. That's all we were looking to get out of it.”

The Academy of Art distance crew was also in action Saturday as sophomores Kylie Long and Heather Castro both competed in the 800m run and senior Stacey Toth went out for the 1500m. In addition, junior Emily Allis participated in the 400m hurdles event.

Joining Long, members of the ART U women's volleyball team including seniors Camille Board and Amy Bush as well as freshman Brittany Ulmer composed the Knights' 4x400m relay team. Academy of Art volleyball also had sophomore Mykal "Myke" Vailu'u in the shot put, and Janelle Burnett was the lone ART U competitor in Friday's javelin throw.

For the men, seniors Kennedy Kurgat and Amos Maru both had strong distance performances despite the weather. Kurgat placed 2nd out of 34 competitors in the 800m run with a time of 1:56.95. Maru, who ran with countrymen and fellow seniors Daveson Marindich and Simon Mutai in the 1500m, took 6th of 69 and produced a time of 3:57.88.

Junior Ricco McCloud produced a new program record in the 400m hurdles when he completed the event with a 58.59 mark. He was also in action with junior Brazer Bozlak in the 200m dash. Sophomore Marquis Scruggs partook in the Knights' other sprint event, the 100m dash.

A strong run in the 5000m gave freshman Jack Nevins 7th place out of 40 others. It was a solid result for his first time competing in the outdoor event.

Academy of Art University will be back in action next weekend when the teams compete in the Texas Relays (Mar. 29-31) and Fresno State's Bulldog Invitational (Mar. 31).
