Round 2 Recap
Santa Rosa, CA -- After a great first round put them in contention for the final push, the Academy of Art University women's golf team ran into some trouble in the second round at the Sonoma State Women's Invite as they dropped in a hotly contested field to 10th place overall while gloomy weather conditions affected all players.
Crystal Wang had another top finish for the Knights, tying for tenth place in the individual standings.
"The Knights rallied hard in cold weather and tough conditions," said first-year head coach
Elaine Harris. "There was a mid-round pause due to a fog delay. Although we didn't finish a well as we wanted to, we are taking this second day as a learning experience. Overall ART U Women's golf will be working hard at the weight room and during the break to come back ready to win tournaments."
Wang shot 76 in the first round and 77 in the second round to finish with a 153, which tied her for tenth place while only being six strokes behind the top of the leaderboard. Deanna Tydnall dropped but still landed in the top 20, finishing tied for 17th place with a 156.
Melissa Genao (162),
Roxanne Matta (163),
Sierra Sanchez (167), and
Mariana Pazos (170) also saw their scores slip a bit, but still finished well among the 70-player field as the average score went up over a full stroke from the first to second round for the tournament. Andrea Castellenos (CSUEB) finished first overall, followed by Haley Haught (St. Edward's) and then a three-way tie for third place between Abby Marina (Sonoma St.), Casara Hong (UBC), and Kristen Hansen (Western Washington).
ART U didn't fall that far as a team, but the bunched up leaders made it seem probably a little more drastic than it actually was. The Urban Knights added 15 strokes to their first round score, but as in the individual standings, the average team score went up over four strokes in the second round. Academy of Art shot a team score of 637, which was only 23 strokes out of first place. California Baptist scored the team crown, shooting 614, followed by University of British Columbia in second (618), St. Edward's (624), and Western Washington (626). Cal State Monterey Bay and Sonoma State each shot 628 to tie for fifth overall.
The Knights will retire for the winter before getting back in on spring action in mid-February at the Point Loma Nazarene University Spring Classic.Â
