KNIGHT WATCH
In the eight-goal explosion by the ART U offense over two victories this past week, junior
Frederik Nagel and sophomore Jesus "Chava" Sanchez each netted a pair of goals to garner
PacWest weekly honors. Nagel, who now has three goals in four chances and ranks first in the conference in scoring, delivered the game-winner against Simpson while Sanchez provided the goal to put the Knights on top versus Saint Martin's. Senior
Aron Ekberg scored one goal and added two assists to put himself into a tie with current teammate
Andrew Durano for all-time career assists (9). In goal, freshman
Luca Theis has served as the Knights' goalkeeper in both victories with one goal allowed and two saves in just over 169 minutes played.
LANCERS LUNGING FOR FIRST WIN
Just two matches into its 2013 campaign, California Baptist sports a 0-1-1 overall record. The Lancers have gone into overtime on both occasions, opening the year with a 2-1 loss to UC San Diego (Sept. 5) then battling Metro State to a 1-1 tie on Sept. 10. Thus far, Alex Anderson and Jonathan Fausto each have one goal apiece for the Lancers while Ike Akubilo and James Bogdanovich have each contributed an assist. Defensively, Joey Pacheco has been strong in goal as he comes off a 2012 campaign in which he led the PacWest with a .808 save percentage and six shutouts. This year, he has 12 saves and three goals allowed in just over 203 minutes played. Historically, CBU has won both its matches against ART U.
COUGARS ON A RUN
Azusa Pacific began the 2013 season with a 3-0 loss to #21 Cal State Los Angeles (Sept. 5), but soon bounced back by winning three of its next four matches all at home. The Cougars fell to Cal State Dominguez Hills 1-0 (Sept. 7) then reeled off one-goal victories over Hope International (1-0 on Sept. 9), Montana State-Billings (2-1 on Sept. 12), and Concordia (2-1 on Sept. 14). Last year, the Urban Knights picked up their first conference victory against Azusa Pacific,
winning 2-1 on Sanchez's game-winner. Oktay Bulut, among the PacWest's top seven scorers in 2012, has one goal and one assist thus far while Garrett Mehrguth also has three points by way of a goal and an assist. Chip Cox has handled all 459 minutes of goalkeeper duties with six goals allowed and 24 saves thus far. The Cougars will be at Holy Names on Sept. 19 prior to facing ART U this Saturday.
MEN'S SOCCER WINS BACK-TO-BACK MATCHES AT HOME
Academy of Art University showed true grit and determination in its first two victories of the 2013 season, a come-from-behind
2-1 final over Saint Martin's and a
6-0 eruption versus Simpson. In the 62nd minute against the Saints, junior
Jonmundur Gretarsson threaded an impressive pass through the defense to lure out the SMU goalkeeper and set up an open look. The opportunity was more than enough of an opening for Sanchez who tapped it home and gave the Urban Knights their eventual 2-1 winning margin.
On Saturday, less than hour after Academy of Art University Athletics hosted its "Kicking It For Kids" Kickball Tournament, men's soccer displayed its own fancy footwork to the tune of a 6-0 victory against Simpson. ART U tied the program record for most goals in a single match as Nagel, Ekberg, Sanchez, Gretarsson, and sophomore
Lennart Fleschhut each contributed one goal apiece.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Urban Knights will play their first conference road match on Saturday, Sept. 28 when they travel down the Peninsula to Belmont for a meeting with Notre Dame de Namur at 1:30 PM. ART U then returns home to Crocker Amazon Park to host Dominican on Monday, Sept. 30.
