2014 Aztec Invitational Results (Day 1)
San Diego, CA – It was memorable start for many at San Diego State's 2014 Aztec Invitational on Friday as 10 personal records were posted by ART U Track & Field. The Urban Knights' performances were highlighted by a first place finish from
Mistic Scott in the 200m dash and a strong run from
Nicolas Rifflard in the 1500m invitational out at the SDSU Sports Deck.
"Mistic was clearly the star of the show today, head coach
Charles Ryan said. "Her performance in the 200m was a huge step forward for her and hopefully foreshadows a role that she can continue to play for us for the rest of the year. She put a lot of people on notice today. I'm very proud of her and that was a huge PR. "
Scott was on top of her sprint game Friday as she flew to a new personal best of 25.04 in the 200m. The time would put her atop the list of 55 competitors, followed closely by her fellow teammates who all finished in the top 11.
Racquel Jones came in fifth overall and was backed up by
Dierra Haven's seventh place finish,
Amanda Odesjo in ninth, and
Kayla Pritchett 11th overall.
"I was excited to get first in the 200," Scott said. "That was my first time running the 200 in college so I just wanted to run well, have fun, and have a good race."
Other PRs on the women's side came in the form of
Keanna Moody's fourth place finish in the 400m hurdles as well as Haven's time in the 100m dash in which she and Odesjo secured results in the top 18.
For the men, Rifflard captured eighth of 31 in the 1500m, sporting a new personal best of 3:53.87. He will continue to go after the program record of 3:52.56 which was set last season by
Jens Alban.
"We had very solid performances across the board," assisstant coach Nathan Warstler said. "The team is really starting to shape up. We still have a lot of work on, but we are building up great momentum as we prepare to head in the NCAA postseason."
In his first time running the 200m dash for Academy of Art,
Ronald Spears, Jr. delivered a PR of 22.00, earning him fourth place out of 60 competitors. Also among the top 10 was
Alexander McNally whose 22.28 personal record put him the eighth spot.
McNally would also PR in the 100m dash, taking 11th out of 53 while
Quinlan Wright dropped down to a 15.05 in the 110m hurdles for third place.
ART U returns to SDSU Sports Deck for more action tomorrow in the finale of the Aztec Invitational.
"Saturday is a big test for us, everyone who is performing has some major competitions to meet at the start line and this is our first of many big tests to face," Coach Ryan said. "Saturday we will learn a lot about the type of team we really have character-wise."
