Women's Golf Steady on Final Day of Preview

2015 NCAA West Region Spring Preview Final Results

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. —
Steady play was the name of the game Tuesday on the final day of the NCAA West Region Spring Preview as the Academy of Art University women's golf team was one of 14 teams among the top-15 to shoot within nine strokes of their day one total, finishing in sixth place at Foxtail Golf Course.

ART U followed up its first round team total of 313 on Monday with a 317 on Tuesday to total 630 (+54) for the tournament. Only Newman University fell off of its pace from the day prior by more than nine strokes while finishing in the top-15, shooting 319 Tuesday after an opening-round 306 to take third. Barry University won the team title by cutting its team score by four strokes, posting a 302 in the final round after a 306 Monday to win with a 608 (+32). ART U was only seven strokes off of second place West Texas A&M in a tightly contested top-eight that saw seven teams within 10 strokes of each other.

Sophomore Crystal Wang was one of four Academy of Art golfers in the top-35, earning all-tournament honors with a fifth place finish after back-to-back rounds of 76 (+4) for a 152 (+8) tournament total. It was her sixth top-10 finish dating to the fall season and second top-five showing. Freshman Shu-lin Lin finished tied for 14th after shooting a 12-over 84 Tuesday. She was in second place one stroke off the lead after the first round after shooting an even-par 72.

Freshman Sterling Hawkins and sophomore Roxanne Matta both finish tied for 35th with 161 (+17) two-round totals. Hawkins was steady, following her nine-over 80 in the first round with an 81 for the final 18 holes. Matta cut her opening round score by nine strokes, matching Wang with a four-over 76 Tuesday after starting with a 13-over 85.

The sixth place finish was ART U's eighth consecutive in nine tournaments played during the 2014-15 campaign. The 19-team field was the largest the Urban Knights have faced during the season. Four top-25 teams finished ahead of them, while they defeated host and No. 24 (golfstat.com) Sonoma State.

The Urban Knights next take a week off before traveling to St. George, Utah, for the 2015 Pacific West Conference Championship on April 20-22 at Sunbrook Golf Club.
