Wang Finishes 27th at NCAA Championship

2015 NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championship Final Results

ALLENDALE, Mich. — A second day of improvement Saturday allowed Academy of Art University women's golf sophomore Crystal Wang to show her ability to close strong and grab a top-30 finish in the final round of the NCAA Division II Women's Golf National Championship at The Meadows Golf Course.

Wang tied for 27th at the national championship with a four-round total of 312 (+24). She cut her score by two strokes in Saturday's final round, shooting a five-over 77 after a seven-over 79 in Friday's third round. Wang finished ninth among individuals who qualified for the tournament and was the seventh finishing player from the West.

"I am really honored to have coached Crystal at this tournament," said Academy of Art head coach Elaine Harris. "While the scores were not what she wanted, I think she learned a lot and I know that she will be back at the national tournament."

Wang's day began on the back nine with six straight pars, marking her best start in the four rounds of the tournament. She would bogey 16 and 17 but tally back-to-back pars on 18 and hole one on the front nine to stay at two-over. Her final eight holes of the tournament were a mixed bag of results. Wang would bogey four of her last eight holes but also had three pars and a birdie on the par-four fifth to finish at five-over for the day.

"She showed that she can compete with the best in the country, through high wind, rain and tough greens," said Harris.

Wang completes her journey at the NCAA Division II National Championship as the first Academy of Art golfer in the history of the program to qualify for the tournament. She is also the first non-cross country or track and field athlete in the history of Academy of Art athletics to compete at a national championship. She finishes her season with a 76.7 stroke average over 29 rounds, an improvement of more than a stroke from her 77.8 average per round last season.

"I am so happy for Crystal and the team with the year we had and I look forward to only getting better as a team," said Harris.
