2016 Brutus Hamilton Challenge Results
BERKELEY, Calif. – Though a lighter day of action inside Cal's Edwards Stadium, ART U track & field still came away with multiple standout performances at the Brutus Hamilton Challenge on Saturday. Among those was a new program record by
Valentin Pepiot in the mile.
Pepiot was the top finisher representing a collegiate institution and only got better as the race to one mile progressed. After making his move down the stretch, the Frenchman ended up crossing the finish line at 4:04.85 for a new ART U record that bettered the previous mark (also Pepiot's) by nearly six full seconds. It was his first time running the mile this season. Converted to 3:46.71 as a 1500m time, the mark was a NCAA Division II Nationals provisional qualifier and ups him to ninth in the country.
Mobolade Ajomale made his outdoor debut in the 400m dash with a time of 47.69 which made him a NCAAÂ Nationals provisional qualifier. Additionally, he moved into third on the all-time list. Ajomale also joined
Marlon Britton,
Alexander McNally, and
Craig Mattox in the men's 4x100m relay, finishing first of six teams at 40.67.
The men's 100m dash saw a career-best of 10.81 come from McNally. He would cut over a full 0.10 off his previous best.
On the women's side,
Jasmin Guinn made her 2016 track & field debut, soaring to 17-7 (5.36m) in the triple jump. Saturday represented the two-sport athlete's first jump since 2014, the year she captured the
PacWest Conference long jump title. Both
Rian Young-Werner (triple jump) and Mattox (long jump) were also in action, but came up short of their season-best distances.
Just three more weekends of competition remain for Academy of Art before the NCAA postseason and the first of those will be the Pacific West Conference Championships. This year the conference titles will be decided in Azusa on Apr. 28-29.
