2017 The Cardinal Classic Results (Day 1)
STANFORD, Calif. – In a strong start to The Cardinal Classic, Academy of Art offered both a new program 800m record from
Beatriz Martinez Mercado, a season-best in the long jump from
Hannah Hensley, and a personal record
Jasmine Grace in the 200m on Friday.
Having steadily dropped her marks and subsequently the program record in the 800m, Martinez Mercado cut major time off her previous low, going 2:10.48 to enter the country's top 25 in the event. Her previous personal record had been 2:12.36 from mid-March.
In the women's long jump,
Hannah Hensley delivered the farthest distance jumped by an Urban Knight this season, soaring to a 19-0 (5.79m). The mark was 10th overall ahead of Stanford's second competitor and puts her top 35 in NCAA Division II.
Late in the day, Grace stepped into the 200m and did something she had never done before collegiately. She sped to a new personal best 24.63 to give her sole possession of fourth in program history.
The women's 400m hurdles saw
Marion Presigny post a time of 1:00.98. She finished five of 12 ahead of numerous Division I schools such as Harvard, Nevada, and New Mexico.
The Urban Knights return to Cobb Track & Angell Field for day two of The Cardinal Classic. The field events begin at 2 p.m. followed by the track events at 4:30 p.m.
