2018 Mines Alumni Classic & Multi Results

Golden, Colo. – Opening the 2018-19 indoor track & field season with the Mines Alumni Classic & Multi on Friday inside Steinhauer Fieldhouse, Academy of Art was led by two NCAA provisional qualifying marks which came from Rian Young-Werner (Triple Jump) and Darria Matthias (60m).

Young-Werner, came off a 2017-18 campaign that saw her earn All-American honors in both the indoor and outdoor seasons, picked up right where she left off with progressively better jumps as the event moved from its preliminary round to the final. Although she had already positioned herself well after her second jump, Young-Werner's third attempt was her best of the day at 37-5.75 (11.42m). In the final, she would finish on her best mark of all six, soaring to a 38-2.25 (11.64m) good for fourth of 12 jumpers, but more importantly hitting the NCAA provisional standard as she completed her first event this season. Young-Werner finds herself eighth in all of NCAA Division II at this point.

Competing in a 60m dash prelim fraught with Academy of Art competitors (six in total), Matthias made her debut in the ART U red and black at 7.81 (converted to 7.83 for Altitude), reaching the final third of 22 along with Selena Arjona-Alcazar (fifth) and Latavia Hawkins (sixth). The final then saw Matthias improve upon her initial time with a 7.54 (converted to 7.56) that had her second to Colorado State's MaryBeth Sant as well as second in NCAA DII with a provisional qualification. Arjona-Alcazar and Hawkins would each post the same mark, 7.96 (converted to 7.98), taking sixth and seventh place overall.

On the men's side, Christian Carter posted a 7.26 mark to finish ninth in the preliminaries of the 60m, just missing out on qualification for the final by 0.06 seconds.

Academy of Art will remain in the state for the inaugural Colorado Running Company University of Colorado Colorado Springs Invitational beginning at 1 p.m. MT (noon PT).
