SAN FRANCISCO -- The 2019 Academy of Art baseball season was a year of regional and conference honors, individual and team records, win streaks and hot starts, but also injuries and tough losses. With a 17-29 overall record and a 6-25 conference record, ART U's season was the third most wins in the 11 years as a program.

"This year was very pivotal in the development of our program," said head coach
Dan McDermott. "While we started out really quick, winning our first seven straight, a combination of reasons, not excuses, made it difficult to sustain that success. We were down to our third string catcher by the end of the season and on top of that at least two or three more everyday guys were injured. While our win total did not continue the upward trend of the past several seasons, we have a really bright future as a program."
Statistically, the Urban Knights put together the best offensive numbers in program history. They set new team records in runs (234), hits (428), and runs batted in (212). The Knights also broke the single-season doubles (77) and triples (16) record, and set the mark for highest team batting average in history at .282.
The new team records rode on the backs of a flurry of individual record setting performances. Most notably junior outfielder
Thomas Delgadillo's 73 hits demolished the previous single-season hits record of 59, set by Joey Marchini in 2015. Delgadillo also set the mark for highest batting average, with an incredible .422 and became the only Urban Knight to ever hit over .400. He also claimed the on-base percentage record at .466 and total base record with 92. Senior catcher
Zak May left his mark in the record books by breaking the single-season runs batted in record. Senior second-baseman
Elijah Smith cemented himself as one of the most prolific extra base-hit sluggers in ART U history after breaking the single-season doubles record and career triples record. Smith already owned the single-season triples record after hitting seven in 2018. Junior shortstop
Justin Summers rounded out the individual records by breaking the single-season runs record by scoring 38 times to break the record of 36 set by Johnathan Robbins in 2010.Â

Three of the four record breakers were honored with
All-PacWest honors, as was senior pitcher
Gonzo Rios. Delgadillo was named All-PacWest First Team, Smith earned Second Team accolades, and Rios and May were included on the All-PacWest Third Team. The four All-PacWest awards is the most ever by an ART U baseball team.
In another ART U baseball first, Delgadillo was named
All-West Region Second Team by  Division II Conference Commissioners Association. Shortly after, another organization, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, once again named Delgadillo All-West Region Second Team, and additionally, gave Smith an
Honorable Mention on the All-Region Team as a second baseman.
"Every year there is one guy that you really feel is irreplaceable. For us, this year, that guy is Bear Smith. He was our team MVP. What he brings to the table as an athlete is everything that you want in your team. He has put his stamp on the program and his contributions are difficult to truly measure. Bear made Urban Knight baseball better"
ART U started the 2019 season with a bang, exploding for 14 runs in a
decisive win over Simpson on Opening Day. It was the most runs any ART U team had scored on Opening Day and clear foreshadowing of things to come. The next two games with the Red Hawks were canceled due to rain, as were the first two games of ART U's series with Central Washington. After the four straight cancellations, the Urban Knights came out ready to play, winning back-to-back come-from-behind, one-run games to sweep the
doubleheader with CWU. In game two, senior outfielder
Taj Dawson drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth to walk off the Cougars.

The Urban Knights continued to improve on their best start in program history with a series sweep of Bay Area rival Holy Names in a non-conference set. In
game one, ART U erupted for 16 runs on 18 hits, including four from May who went 4-for-6 with four runs batted in and hit his first home run of the season. The foil to game one, the series finale featured a
2-1 walk off win from a Summers single to score two runs and a stellar pitching performance form senior pitcher
Mason Verhees who did not surrender a single earned run and fanned six without walking a batter for his first win of the year. The series sweep sent the Urban Knight win streak to seven, and preserved their undefeated record at 7-0.
The undefeated season came to an end on February 22 against Northwest Nazarene. The Nighthawks took down ART U the first three games of the series, but the Urban Knights fought back to
win the final game 4-3. Junior pitcher
Galen Manhard came on in the final inning to shut down NNU and nail down his fourth save of the season to break the career and single season saves record. Manhard would end the season with seven saves, more than twice the previous record.

PacWest play was next, starting with a strong No. 17 Point Loma. The series was shortened to three games due to inclement weather, and after dropping the first two games, ART U upset the Sea Lions in the finale with a
5-4 walk off win. Smith did the honors, with a double to right field scoring two and giving the Urban Knights their first win against a ranked opponent since they beat No. 9 Azusa Pacific on
March 31, 2017.
A split with Holy Names in a conference rematch followed. The Hawks took game one, but the Urban Knights swept the doubleheader the next day with a
pair of walk off wins. The first walk off came from senior first baseman
Angel Mora in the bottom of the tenth. Mora scorched a single past the third baseman to score senior first baseman
Josh Carlin and give ART U a 3-2 win. Rios notched the win in game one after throwing a dominant 5.1 innings in which he did not allow a single hit or run and struck out six. The sensational outing earned him PacWest Pitcher of the Week honors on
March 18. In the second game of the twinbill, Summers launched his first career home run in the bottom of the seventh for a 2-1 victory and the second walk off of the day. Verhees picked up his third win after throwing a complete game while allowing just one run and striking out seven.
The Urban Knights traded the fog of the Bay for the sunshine of the islands and traveled to Hawaii for an eight game road trip. Hawaii Pacific came first and after dropping the first three games, ART U took the final game of the series 8-7. The Sharks did not make it easy though. The Urban Knights were down 7-2 in the fifth, but rallied back in the late innings, scoring three in the sixth and eighth while completely shutting down HPU to add one to their win column.
Academy of Art ended their Hawaii trip with a four game set against UH Hilo before returning home to face Concordia. The Knights won
game three against Concordia behind an exceptional pitching performance from Verhees who threw five innings without surrendering a hit. Mora came in for a pinch hit with the bases loaded in the last inning and wore a pitch off the shoulder to score the winning run, for a 2-1 ART U victory. The Urban Knights next win came on the road against Biola on
April 12. ART U took down the Eagles 9-8 from strong offensive performances from May, who went 2-for-3 with three runs batted in, and Mora, who hit his second homer of the season and drove in four runs.

The West Region Runner-up Azusa Pacific came to town next and swept ART U, but a silver lining shined through with more broken records. In game two, Delgadillo became ART U's single season hit leader after knocking his 60th hit of the season. Delgadillo's 73 season hits was fourth most in the conference. Then in the
final game of the series, May had one of the best single-game hitting performances in ART U history, going 3-for-5 with two home runs and five runs batted in. May needed just three runs batted in to break the record, but ended the day with five to vault past former tenth round draft pick Zach Babitt's previous record of 27. May also became one of only two Urban Knights to ever hit two home runs in one game and one of four to drive in five runs in a single game. May ended the season with 35 RBI, eight more than the previous record.
The Urban Knights got back on track with a series win against Corban. Academy of Art put up 13 hits in game one, including five Knights with two hits each, to propel them to a
6-4 victory. Rios picked up his fifth win and Manhard earned his seventh save after their crucial performances out of the bullpen. The Knights
swept the doubleheader the following day with more explosive offense, totaling for 20 runs on 25 hits. Delgadillo tore down another record, longest hit-streak, after hitting safely in 14 straight, while Smith tied the career triples record with his 10th and broke the single season doubles record with his 17th. On the defensive side, Rios collected his second win of the series and sixth of the season to tie the single-season wins record. Â
 Â
In the final series of 2019, Fresno Pacific swept Academy of Art, but the Urban Knights battled in every game, losing three of the games by just one run. In day two's doubleheader alone, ART U collected 28 hits and 17 runs. The Knights ended the season by scoring seven or more runs and double digit hits in each of their last three games.

"We are having an outstanding recruiting year and have already signed quality players to help fill the void left by our departing seniors," said McDermott. "We will really miss the contributions of
Robert "Gio" Villanueva, Verhees, and Dawson. Those three guys came in as freshmen and it was really fun to help bring them through the program. It is unfortunate that Gio was not able to participate more this season. His quiet presence, quality defense, and clutch bat were sorely missed. It felt really strange not to pencil his name into the line-up card."
The 2019 Academy of Art baseball season had ups, downs, challenges met and learned from, and above all, records falling like rain during a series in early February. The Urban Knights are confident of a favorable future forecast.
