Academy of Art Opens Outdoor Season With Kim Duyst Invite

Among the Urban Knights not competing at NCAA Division II Indoor Nationals, action was split across the Kim Duyst Invitational and Cal Opener on Saturday.

TURLOCK, Calif. – A collection of upper tier finishes came for Academy of Art track & field in its outdoor debut at Stanislaus State's Kim Duyst Invitational hosted on the Al Brenda Track.

Competing in his first official 400m hurdles race as an Urban Knight, Davian Baker stepped into fourth in program history with a 54.96 mark. He was the top finisher of 12 others including a pair from Fresno Pacific. Baker also contributed one of four legs of the 4x100m relay with Gino Toscano, Daquan Berry, and Lennard Marshall, going 41.98 for second on the day and moving into the nation's top 15.

Individually, Berry shined in a pair of events, posting a 10.99 in the 100m that was just 0.03 from his personal best and a 22.12 in the 200m. He claimed the top mark of 41 total in the 100m, number one of 57 in the 200m, and started in the nation's top 25 in both.

Among the top two in their respective events, Toscano offered a 15.19 for second of 20 in the 110m hurdles and Latavia Hawkins went 57.93 for runner-up to only Pacific West Conference champion Brie Courseault from Fresno Pacific.

A busy man in multiple events, Hudson Lockette began the outdoor season with strong performances in both the 800m and 1500m, finishing in the top 10 of each event which featured 47 and 73 total competitors respectively.

BERKELEY, Calif. – Along with the Kim Duyst Invitational, members of the ART U track & field teams competed at the Cal Opener inside Edwards Stadium.

On the men's side, Arrun Palacio debuted inside the nation's top 20 in the long jump with a 21-11.5 (6.69m) mark. The women's team saw Madison McMahon match marks from NCAA Division I UC Berkeley with a 5-1.25 (1.56m) good for top 22 in the country and fourth all-time in Academy of Art history.

This coming week features the final indoor meet of the season with the NCAA Division II Indoor National Championships set for Mar. 13-14 in Birmingham. The outdoor season continues the following week with Sacramento State's Hornet Invitational on Mar. 20-21.
