Stuart's Steals Streak Secures PacWest Defender of Week

PacWest Weekly Awards (Jan. 10)

IRVINE, Calif. – Currently riding an incredible seven-game streak of collecting three or more steals (four straight with four or more), Academy of Art women's basketball junior guard Chanel Stuart garnered the honor of Pacific West Conference Defender of the Week. She swiped nine steals, grabbed four defensive rebounds, and added three blocks in a pair of ART U victories over Point Loma and Holy Names in the team's first action of 2022. The award is for games played from Jan. 3-9.

In a 70-61 win hosting the Sea Lions on Jan. 6, Stuart started by racking up four steals including two during a 6-0 run out of halftime to help the Urban Knights gain separation. The Communications & Media Technologies major also secured three rebounds on the defensive end, registered a season-high three blocks, and drew three fouls in that contest. Two days later on Jan. 8, Stuart was at it again, notching all her season-best five steals in the second half of a 67-41 victory against the Hawks highlighted by the team's fewest points allowed this season.

On the year, Stuart has elevated herself to first in the PacWest and top 40 in NCAA Division II in steals per game (2.6).

This is the first PacWest weekly honor for Stuart this season and seventh in her career as well as the fourth for Academy of Art women's basketball in 2021-22 with freshman forward/center Alisha Wilson receiving two (Nov. 27, Dec. 13) and graduate student guard Joy Krupa's Nov. 22 award.
