Ragona And Shiau Earn All-PacWest Singles, Doubles Honors

2022 All-PacWest Teams

IRVINE, Calif. –
In a year where they have been 2021 ITA West Region Doubles Champions and enjoyed a national ranking as high as No. 6 in the country as a doubles pair, Academy of Art sophomores Sofia Ragona and Yun "Nicole" Shiau have now both collectively and individually earned Pacific West Conference postseason awards. Both Ragona and Shiau were selected to the All-PacWest First Team Doubles, while Ragona was an All-PacWest First Team Singles honoree and Shiau an All-PacWest Second Team Singles selection.

Sofia Ragona & Yun Nicole Shiau"Congratulations to Sofia and Nicole for earning these awards," said Head Coach Clarisse Baca. "They both have worked so hard to be where they are and I'm so happy they are being recognized."

The duo of Ragona and Shiau have been quite the pair as a doubles tandem, posting a 6-2 doubles record this season exclusively from court one after capturing the ITA West Regional Doubles Championship. They would represent the Knights in Rome, Ga. on the national level at the ITA Cup, where they lost in the quarterfinals to the eventual champions. Earlier today, they would clinch the doubles point for ART U in their opening-round win of the PacWest Championship over MSU Denver. This is the second All-PacWest honor for the duo, who were ranked as high as No. 6 this season and were selected to the All-PacWest Third Team last season. Additionally, Ragona was also named to the third team in 2019 with former partner Mariacristina Andrisani

Ragona accumulated a 7-4 record this season exclusively from court one, and was at one time ranked No. 9 in the nation in singles play. Though missing some time this year, Ragona recorded a five-match winning streak and closed the regular season schedule with a triumph over No. 47 Maria Borodii of Fresno Pacific for her first win over a ranked opponent this campaign. This is the second consecutive year that Ragona has earned All-PacWest First Team honors, while she was a singles third team honoree in 2019

At one time enjoying a national rank as high as No. 42 in the nation, Shiau tallied an 8-3 record in singles play which includes a 2-0 mark from the No. 1 position and a 4-1 record from the No. 2 position. Opening the season on a five-match winning streak, Shiau lost just one set across the eight matches that she won. This is the second All-PacWest honor for Shiau, as she was named to the All-PacWest Second Team last campaign
