Yang, Tsai Sit Top 10 To Open PacWest Tournament

With the first round of the women's golf Pacific West Conference Championship all wrapped up, Academy of Art's squad concluded day one of action with a 32-over-par 320 combined score as a unit while currently sitting in second place in the seven team field, just two strokes back of first.

"I am very pleased with how the team performed today," said Head Coach Beth Allen. "Although there were windy conditions, I'm proud that the team mentally stayed strong and I'm overall thrilled with how the first day played out."

Sophomore Nicole Yang recorded the lowest first round on the Urban Knights, as she hit a 6-over-par 78. Two strokes back of the individual lead, Yang ranks in fourth place overall. Joining her teammate within the top 10 in individual play is freshman Chantel Tsai, as she completed her day currently ranked tied for fifth place with six others, with all shooting a 7-over-par 79. Graduate student Jae Eun Park is right there with them, as she is tied for 13th place just another stroke back with a 8-over-par 80 score. Rounding out the squad for ART U is the pair of seniors Napat "Plern" Rattanaprakarn and Valeria Ruiz, as Rattanaprakarn concluded the first round with a 11-over-par 83 and Ruiz finished with a 15-over-par 87.

While the Knights sit two strokes behind first place, Biola finished their first day of action with a 30-over-par 318 while their best golfer finds themselves in fifth in individual play, a stroke shy of Yang and tied with Tsai. With UH Hilo knotted with ART U while Point Loma is one stroke behind in team play, the Knights hold a five-stroke lead over Hawaii Pacific, a 14-stroke lead over Dominican, and a 23-stroke lead over Westmont. Shuiyun He of HPU currently holds sole first place in the individual rankings with a 4-over-par 76 while Kiara Hernandez of Point Loma and Kiersten Saludares are tied for second with their 5-over-par 77.

The second of three rounds will commence tomorrow at Mauna Lani Country Club.
