ON THE ROAD AGAIN AND HOME AGAIN

After splitting their first two matches of the 2024 campaign with a home and away battle, Academy of Art returns to the road as they'll head out to Texas where the squad will take on a duo of southern teams, battling with St. Mary's (Tex.) before closing the trip out with a match against St Edward's. ART U then returns home for a one-match stint to compete with Stanislaus State.

KICKOFF
ART U kicks off on Thursday, Sept.19, 2024 at 4 p.m. CT (2 p.m. PT) against St. Mary's (Tex.) and the following Saturday, Sept. 21, 2024 at Noon CT (10 a.m. PT) against St. Edward's. The home match against Stanislaus will commence on Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2024 at 11 a.m. Remember to follow @ARTU_Knights via the athletics app (Apple App Store, Google Play Store) and on Twitter & Instagram as well as "Like" the Urban Knights on Facebook for score updates, videos, and recaps.

Chris StokesKNIGHT WATCH
Just two matches into their 2024 season, the Urban Knights are most recently coming off a scoreless draw against MSU Denver on Sept. 14 where redshirt freshman goalkeeper Florian Grollmann stepped up to allow no goals off 10 shots faced. Grollmann's five saves earned him his first career clean sheet en route to the squad's tie with the Roadrunners. Redshirt junior forward Elvis Mensah has the first goal of the season for the Knights, with his score against Monterey Bay on Sept. 5. Senior defender Chris Stokes guided that ball towards Mensah across the box to earn the assist after it was thrown in by senior defender Elijah Cofer, who adds an additional threat to the squad's offense with his big-time distance from the sideline. The Knights are showing a new look this season with already seven different members of the squad taking a shot at goal, and, with eight of the starters from last match not starting a game last season, ART U looks ready to roll with their new style of play.

REPELLING THE RATTLERS
St. Mary's (Tex.) currently holds a 1-1-2 overall record headed into their match with ART U. The Rattlers started their season with a 3-1 win against Our Lady of the Lake on their home field, with their two ties coming against Colorado Mesa and St. Edward's and their lone loss being handed to them by No. 15 Fort Lewis. Gael Gallegos leads the squad in points (5), with five others on the squad earning at least one point through their first four matches. Johnny Thurbin will be the man in net, as he's started every match thus far with a .786 save percentage on 34 shots faced. Thurbin has given up just three goals through four matches, as he has saved 11 shots in that time frame. The Rattlers are 1-0 all-time against Academy of Art as they won their most recent meeting came last season.

HELLO HILLTOPPERS
St. Edward's started their 2024 campaign 0-2-1 and are set to challenge Northeastern State before facing Academy of Art. The Hilltoppers started the season with back-to-back losses against Delta State and Mississippi College before tying with St. Mary's (Tex.) in their scoreless draw most recently. Christian Mezas and Masood Porsa split the two goals scored the squad has recorded thus far, both solo without an assist to make theirs the only points for all players. Jacob Madden and Kaleo Francis each have at least a start in goal, with the latter being most recent where he gave up no scores compared to Madden's six through his two starts. In Francis' solo start which was a clean sheet, he recorded six saves off 11 shots faced. This will be the first ever match between St. Edward's and ART U.

WELCOME IN, WARRIORS
Stanislaus State has rolled through their first four matches of the season, starting it off with a 3-1 record with double-digit goals scored in that timeframe. Starting the campaign off with a 4-1 victory over Saint Martin's, the following matches came as a 3-0 loss to Simon Fraser before victories over two Pacific West Conference Hawaii schools in Chaminade 4-1 and Hawaii Pacific 2-0. The Warriors spread the ball around quite a bit, with a total of 10 members of Stan State having scored a point with eight of those recording a goal. Marco Carbajal leads the squad in points (5) with two scores and an assist, while Elio Corral is tied with two others with four, but is the only other Warrior to knock in at least two scores. Angel Ruiz-Hernandez will be guarding the net, as he's given up five goals with 13 saves. All time against the Knights, Stanislaus State has a record of 4-2-1.

ART U HOME OPENER ENDS IN SCORELESS DRAW WITH MSUD
In a match with 14 total shots combined at the net between Academy of Art men's soccer and MSU Denver on Sept. 14, both goalkeepers had a plethora of action but no scores came to fruition for either squad to finalize the game as a scoreless draw on Saturday in the Urban Knights' debut match at SF Glens at Treasure Island Field.

LOOKING AHEAD
After their matches against St. Mary's (Tex.), St. Edward's, and Stan State, Academy of Art will next travel to Hawaii as they'll compete with the trio of PacWest Conference schools on the islands in UH Hilo, Chaminade, and Hawaii Pacific.
