Mustang Intercollegiate Day One Results
GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Sophomore
Matthew Watkins tied the best single round score in Academy of Art men's golf program history in back to back rounds with a pair of 67s (-5) at the Mustang Intercollegiate Monday at Palm Valley Golf Club.
Watkins' phenomenal score is the best ART U round since senior
Oskar Frick's 67 (-5) back in 2015 in the first round of the
Sonoma State Fall Invitational. With a cumulative score of 134 (-10) the sophomore Communications and Media Technologies major ends tied for third on a day he collected 10 birdies and an eagle. The Urban Knights' 567 places them ninth as a team and just two strokes out of sixth. Colorado School of Mines leads with a score of 555.
Behind Watkins is the Urban Knight he tied for the record, Frick who shot a 71 (-1) in round one before improving one stroke for a 70 (-2) round two. Frick ends the day tied for 24th with a cumulative score of 141 (+3). Junior
Gabriel De Leon Manotoc came next, placing 33rd after starting with a stellar 69 (-3) round one and a solid 74 (+2) in the final round of the day. Senior
Lawrence Liang rounded out the Urban Knight scorers with a cumulative 150. Liang's best round was a 72 (E) in the second.
Academy of Art will be back on the links of the Palm Valley Golf Club tomorrow starting at 9 a.m. where Watkins will look to close out one the best individual performances in ART U history.
