2019 Men's Soccer Schedule
SAN FRANCISCO -- Academy of Art men's soccer and head coach
Matt Martin have announced the 17-match schedule for 2019. The Urban Knights will play nine home matches, 11 PacWest opponents, and six non-conference matches, running from Sept. 6 to Nov. 14.
The season kicks off with a home match versus first-time opponent, Missouri St. Louis, on Sept. 6. Two days later ART U faces Stanislaus State, whom the Knights tied 2-2 in the school's last meeting in 2016.
"We wanted balance in our schedule," said Martin. "Having a lot of matches early would test our depth and give us an opportunity to experience big road matches before the conference schedule."
A week long break precedes a Sept. 15 home match with Cal State Monterey Bay. Last season, ART U captured their
first win of the year versus the Otters with a dramatic golden goal in overtime for a 1-0 victory. The Knights will stay on home turf for a Sept. 20 matchup with Saint Martin's against whom they are 1-0 historically. Two days later, ART U will head north to take on Chico State for their final non-conference tune-up.
"We eliminated non-conference games against PacWest opponents," commented Martin. "In doing so, we improved our experience by widening our exposure to other conferences."
PacWest play begins with an away match in Belmont, Calif. versus Notre Dame de Namur on Sept. 26. The Knights will then return home for a two-match homestand, versus Azusa Pacific on Oct. 3 and Concordia (Calif.) on Oct. 10. ART U will make their lone trip to Southern California to face Biola on Oct. 17 and Point Loma on Oct. 19.
"We expect to do well in the PacWest," said Martin. "We play only four teams in the first three weeks of conference play. We then play five matches in the next two weeks which is where the development of our depth will show."
Academy of Art returns to San Francisco, and on Oct.22, they will look to extend their four-match win streak dating back to 2014 against Holy Names.
ART U defeated the Hawks 4-0 setting a season high in goals during when the teams met last season. Dominican comes to town on Oct. 26 before the Knights face a final non-conference opponent, Saint Katherine's, three days later.
The final home game of the season and "Senior Day" is slated for Nov. 2. The Urban Knights will face Fresno Pacific whom they battled into overtime
last year following a 3-3 tie at the end of regulation.
Following "Senior Day,"ART U will say aloha to a three-match trip in Hawaii. The trip begins with Chaminade on Nov. 9, continues with Hawaii Pacific on Nov. 11, and the season finale comes Nov. 14 against UH Hilo. The Urban Knights have won four of the past five meetings with the Vulcans and will look to continue their success and end their season on a high note.
"We expect better results in 2019," said Martin. "We have players connected to each other who are bought in and the new guys know they are coming into a team and everyone believes in the group as a whole!"
