Representing Academy of Art women's cross country at this weekend's NCAA Division II West Regional Championship, senior
Grace Southern looks to carry the momentum from her dominant 2024 run. The morning of Saturday, Nov. 9 at Amend Park in Billings, Mont. will see Southern compete against the best from the Pacific West Conference, California Collegiate Athletic Association, and Great Northwest Athletic Conference with an opportunity to reach NCAA Nationals on the line. The women's 6k race begins at 11:15 a.m. MT (10:15 a.m. PT) following the men's race. The top 25 finishers will be recognized as All-West Region while the top two individuals who are not part of a qualifying team will automatically advance to the national meet. All individuals who finish in the top five at the regional meet and are not part of a qualifying team automatically will advance to the NCAA Nationals. Other individuals may advance via an at-large selection that will be announced on Monday following the regional competition.
After opening the year with the fourth-fastest 5k (18:38.34) in Academy of Art history at the Seawolf Invitational (
Sept. 9), Southern spent the Kim Duyst Twilight Invitational (
Sept. 14) contending with several of the runners she will face this weekend en route to earning her first of two
PacWest Runner of the Week honors. The Textile Design major then added not only her
second conference award, but was named
USTFCCCA DII National Athlete of the Week for her impressive individual victory and second-fastest career time (20:58.6) at the Cougar Challenge (
Sept. 28). Southern followed up the performance by finishing among the top six in two races, the SF State Invitational (
Oct. 11) and Bronco Invitational (
Oct. 19), of more than 100 competitors. In her most recent action at the PacWest Championship on
Oct. 26, delivered her third-fastest 6k mark of the year, going 21:24.3 for seventh overall.
