Andy Moren began as head men's golf coach at Academy of Art University in July 2013.
Returning to action after an 11-month stretch with no competition due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Academy of Art men's golf won three tournaments in 2021 including its
first Pacific West Conference Championship. Led by three-time PacWest Golfer of the Week Julius Kreutzer, who would go on to be named
PacWest Golfer of the Year and
GCAA NCAA DII PING All-West Region Team, the Urban Knights made their first NCAA DII West/South Central Regional appearance as a team and had four earnÂ
All-PacWest Team and
Academic All-PacWest plus three
PacWest All-Tournament Team. The campaign also included Moren being named
PacWest Coach of the Year.
The Urban Knights' 2020 campaign, Moren's seventh season at the program's helm, saw a deeper ART U squad steadily progress to their best finish of the fall at Chico State's Sierra Central Wildcat Classic in October before capturing a team title at the Notre Dame de Namur Argonaut Invitational on the eve of an abrupt end to the spring campaign caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Through six tournaments, the team had offered its lowest average score (293.39) to date and went on to earn its fifth consecutiveÂ
GCAA All-Academic Team honor on top of numerous individual academic awards. Two-time PacWest Golfer of the Week Julius Kreutzer ended the season as theÂ
PacWest Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was one of five Urban Knights namedÂ
Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars.
In 2019, men's golf had their highest finish ever at the PacWest Championship (T2nd) and had four selections to the All-PacWest Team, the most in program history. For the second consecutive year, the Urban Knights sent an individual to the NCAA West/South Central Regionals.
ART U saw significant progress under Moren's tenure. Under his guidance, the men's golf team has received six All-PacWest awards and three consecutive Golf Coaches Association of America All-Academic Team honors (2015-18) in addition to 19 individual Academic All-PacWest honors. In 2018, Lawrence Liang also became the program's firstÂ
Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar in program history.
Under Moren's watch, the men's golf team saw Oskar Frick crowned the individual champion at the
Sonoma State Fall Invitational, named to the
All-Region Team in 2015-2016, and later qualify for the NCAA West Regional Tournament (all three were firsts for the program).
Before joining the Urban Knights, Moren was part of a coaching staff that sent Cal State Stanislaus to the NCAA Division II West Regionals in Dupont, Wash. The Warriors finished one-under par as a team, only seven strokes out of the third spot that would have sent them to the finals. He graduated from Stanislaus with a degree in Political Science, and recently earned a Master of Arts in Kinesiology from St. Mary's College with a concentration in Sports Management.
As a Warriors men's golfer, Moren won four tournaments from 2005 to 2008, including the Stanislaus Buzzini Invitational twice (2005 and 2007), the Dennis Rose Invitational (2007), and the Drake Invitational (2008). He was named to the GCAA All-Region Team three times (2005, 2007, 2008), the All-CCAA First Team in all four years, earned the Phil Mickelson NCAA Division II Freshman of the Year Award in 2005, and was named to the GCAA All-American Team for Division II in 2005 as well. As a pro golfer he won the Golden State Tour at Morgan Run Country Club in 2011.
