2019 PacWest Conference Championship Final Results
LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. -- Academy of Art men's golf is runner-up at the PacWest Championship after a phenomenal round three, shooting 2-under-par 286. The strong final day performance was led by the duo of juniors
Gabriel De Leon Manotoc and
Otto Homruen who both shot 1-under-par in the final round to tie for second and claim a spot on the All-PacWest Tournament team. The Urban Knights were just three strokes away from capturing a PacWest title after shooting the lowest third round of any team. This is ART U's best finish in program history and highest tournament finish of the spring.
"The guys gave everything they had today," said head coach
Andy Moren. "I couldn't be happier with their performances. Gabe and Otto played so well for us and I am very proud of them."
After the final round of play Manotoc and Homruen had an even cumulative score of 216 to come in as the top-two scorers for the Urban Knights. Behind them was sophomore
Matthew Watkins who came on strong in round three with by far his best round of the tournament. Watkins fired 3-under-par 69 for the second best third round of the entire field for a cumulative score of 226 and 19th place. Rounding out the scorers was senior
Oskar Frick who tied for 25th and improved six strokes for a 74 in the final round. Senior
Lawrence Liang matched Frick's 74 for his best round of the tournament and a 28th place finish.
"It is unfortunate to come so close to winning a championship," commented Moren. "Hopefully we can close it out next year."
Academy of Art will now wait to find out if they will be competing in the NCAA D2 South/West Regionals taking place May 9-11 in Saint George, Utah.Â
