IRVINE, Calif. – Starting off the spring season strong as the individual champion at the PCH Invitational, tying the program record for best individual round score (-6), and finishing in fourth place at the Nighthawk Invitational, junior
Giulio Zanichelli has received PacWest Golfer of the Week honors for the beginning of the 2024 campaign.
While Zanichelli ranked second after the first day of competition at the PCH Invite with a 2-under-par 69, the Parma, Italy native contained composure and shot an even-par 71 on the second day of action, finishing with a 2-under-par 140 as the tournament lead. Zanichelli hit a birdie on Hole 14 on both days, and delivered three more on all new holes on day two. He achieved his first collegiate individual tournament win since joining the program in 2021, as he is the first Urban Knight to record a tournament win since Matthew Watkins on
October 12, 2021.
Zanichelli also concluded the Nighthawk Invite as ART U's top finisher, closing the tournament tied for fourth place while climbing 26 spots on the leaderboard with a 1-under-par 143 and closing his second round with the lowest individual tournament round score in ART U program history with his 6-under-par 66. This second record score was the best of Zanichelli's career, tied with Matt Garcia (Apr. 12, 2010),
Stuart Favretto (
Apr. 23, 2012), and
Julius Kreutzer (
Oct. 7, 2019) for the lowest by an Urban Knight, and was the best round in the entire tournament by any player. With a strong second day, Zanichelli shot the sixth-best tournament score in two rounds for ART U all-time.
This Golfer of the Week honor is the first of Zanichelli's career and is the first for ART U this season.
